Has anyone actually heard the rifle sounds of the Cavalry? For some reason it sounds mute, I could hear the horse moving when they attack, but when they shoot the rifle........no bang???

Don't get mixed up when your Cavalry attacks a rifleman/musketman/infantry because the rifle sounds could be coming from them, and not your Cavalry. Either listen for it when a Cavalry attacks a Cavalry, or when your Cavalry attacks a sword-wielding enemy.

I just can't seem to hear the rifle sounds, anybody else having the same problem? I need to know if its my sound problem or if its a problem with the game itself, thanks.

I have had this problem too.

An easy way to fix it would be to change some of the Cavalry sound files around; though in essence, it is really just a bug.

If you listen carefully to a Cavalry vs Cavalry battle, you'll hear what sounds like a pig sty. I think it's supposed to sound like the horses grunting but to me it more resembles the sound of pigs oinking :P

As for Cavalry vs less advanced units (ie those without firearms), I can hear popping sound of the Cav's carbine.

Did you have any problems installing?

The first CD I brought home reported CRC errors during installation on three .WAV files, one of which turned out to be the Cavalry "shooting" sound and so I had the same problem as you. incidentally, I chose to Ignore the CRC errors during install and the game still ran fine but the corrupted sound files apparently don't work.

I brought that CD back and got a new one. Guess what? I got more CRC errors but on three completely different .WAV files!! So now I can hear my Cavalry firing (yay!) but sooner or later I'm going to find out which sound was sacrificed (boo!).

Here's the solution: find out the problem file (I forgot the filename, sorry) and have someone send you a good copy. I'm going to make that request later today when I go home and get the 3 bad filenames (which I wrote down this time). Hopefully, some kind person will make them available for me! :)

Is this something worth sending back to the store? Could it really be a defective disc?

I never had any problems installing, at least none that I know of. There was no corrupted files.

Maj, are you sure the noise of the carbine is actually the gun sound? Or does it sound more like a click? It shouldn't sound like a "pop", it should be more of a "bang!!"

Check the directory C://Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization lll/Art/units/Cavalry

And you should see these sound files:
CavalryAttackbridal.wav
CavalryAttackHorsedown.wav
CavalryAttackHorseup.wav
CavalryAttackRifle.wav
CavalryAttackWhinny.wav

Those are the sounds that should happen during an attack.
Listen to the CavalryAttackRifle.wav, and tell me if thats the sound of the carbine you hear.

Anunikoba, do you get this problem all the time, or do you occasionally hear the Cavalry gun sounds, and sometimes you don't?

I thought the first one was due to a bad CD but the second one does the same thing (reports CRC errors during install) but with different files (but the first appears around 70% installed).

Hmm, my files don't have full names like that... hmmmm

EDIT: oh, BTW, the Cavalry definitely has a "BANG!" attack sound. The "click" and "horse whinny" is on reload/defend.

The sound of the file "CavalryAttackRifle.wav" is the bang sound I expect to hear. So the file apparantly exists, however in the game, it just never seems to show up. All I could hear is the horse moving and whining, but no rifle bang.

I tried re-installing the game, and I had no corrupt files.

Realistically, is this something that should be returned to the store as "defective"? Because I always thought a defective disc is only one that has some sort of error in the install, or doesn't run. But my game runs fine, just this little problem that seems to occur. Is this lack of "rifle bang" for the Cavalry a universal thing, or is it just my particular CD? Shouldn't all the copies of Civ throughout the world be entirely alike in files? (unless defective, in which case an error would show up on the install)

It's a universal problem in the game I'm sure. I noticed it in my games as well. I have found a far more annoying feature of the game however.

When your in the city screen deciding what you want to build for your city, you can't visit the civlopedia before you build something. If you close the city screen to check the civlopedia the game usually continues without you, annoying as all hell.

Hey Endureth,

Does it happen all the time, or only periodically? That is, is the lack of rifle sound from the Cavalry consistent, or is it sporadic where it works sometimes but other times it doesn't.

I'm trying to figure out if its something that we're possibly doing, or a setting that we might have that might be preventing the wav. file from being played.
