I bought this game, but have not played it very much.

In Civ 6, I could march off with 3 archers and two warriors and start conquering my neighbors. I tried that in this game, and got overwhelmed with floods of military units from the other civ. Roughly how large a military am I going to need if I want to conquer another Civ? Do I even need to conquer other civs if I want to go for a science victory? Can someone point me at general tutorials for this game?

It depends on the difficult level.

In generally, unit fluctuation is much higher than in civ V and VI. Units are cheaper and don‘t get promotions, so they are more disposable. You may need 5 units for capturing a settlement fast, or 8-10. It really depends on difficulty and the situation/terrain. I wouldn‘t start a war with less than 10 units that are ready to march towards the enemy. If you lose 2 or 3, that’s not so problematic.

Commanders are very important. They get all the promotions, and these are very useful. On higher difficulties, commanders are a must to overcome the AI‘s combat bonuses.

Currently, many (but not all) infantry units are meh, while cavalry is almost universally good. Siege helps a lot with sieges.

Some civs are just harder to conquer than others. In antiquity, for example, the Mississippians with their archers that burn tiles for multiple rounds can be a nightmare to fight offensively against.

Yikes. It sounds like combat in Civ 7 is a pain in the ass to learn. Meh.

Thanks for the response.

If you are used to civ VI, it‘s not that big of a step. You just need to get used to some more units on the map and commanders. And commanders also make unit movement much less painful - as you can move multiple units „inside“ commanders and also send freshly build units to reinforce commanders. That means that despite more units to control and build, you do not need to spend more clicks on moving them around turn by turn.
