Not able to launch multiplayer games

I have Civ III complete and meet all the specified requirements. I also have Norton Antivirus, but the firewall is configured to allow all Civ III options. The XP firewall is turned off, so i'm sure i don't have a firewall blocking it. Yet everytime I try to launch, or the game I joined tries to launch, my game goes back to the menu screen and freezes. Why is this?

I posted this in a seperate thread since the Crashing multiplayer thread talks mostly of firewalls and ips of 192.168

I also wanted to say that my game freezes when I try to start an email game as well.

I don't play multiplayer, so can't really offer anything specific, but can suggest that you could try and turn-off the firewall and anti-virus to see if it solves the problem.

I believe that some people get freezes when Gamespy is looking for the internet - is the firewall configured to allow gamespy internet access?

I have Norton AntiVirus and Firewall (but not XP) and I remember when I set my Firewall the first time, Gamespy tried to access the net even when I started a PBEM. So it could be Gamespy. Mine didn't crash though.

I appreciate people responding to my plea. I admit I was frustrated and overreacted, so I apologize. I will take the suggested advice and see if it works.
