not on board with ranged attack...

I know Civ is all symbolic, but that screenshot makes me chuckle.

"Alright boys, put some muscle into it, they're just on the other side of that mountain!"

Maybe they are chinese archers. You see stuff like this in things like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Once Upon a Time in China series all the time. heh.

Archers having ranged fire is needed due to the one unit per hex rule; in order to keep the game balanced and have more tactics involved the archers can be protected by units in front.

However, the one unit per hex rule is extremely unrealistic and historically inaccurate, but I suppose that it's good for gameplay.

And generally gameplay > historical realism.

I don't care what arguement you try to use. That screenshot makes the game look like an absolute joke. Archers don't shoot over mountain ranges. It doesn't happen.

I'm fine with the multiple-tile ranged units, but they should have scaled the terrain in such a manner as to make some sort of sense with that system. As it is its playable but somewhat ridiculous, even from a gameplay > realism standpoint.

Your making a big deal of this. I looked at the pic and said, "So okay".

Calling the game a joke is a bit extreme for one minor issue that may rarely pop up. But hey, if it bothers you guys that much there is other games. To each their own I guess.

Normally, something like this doesn't bother even a little. I have no trouble with units shooting over lakes, or 3 tiles, or whatever abstract concept is required...

...but this really devalues mountains. One of the best facets of one unit per hex is that terrain becomes much more important. And mountains were always a joke in civ4. I would have no problem with modern units being able to do it. However, ancient era warfare is supposed to be much more sensitive to terrain.

Ultimately, this is no big deal. But it is a change I would certainly welcome. One of the few from what I have seen so far...

The good news is this attack isn't active by default. They have to promote the unit to indirect fire.

Maybe a firm wind was coming from the right direction... or birds flying over the mountains picked up the arrows and dropped them on the other side... :p

Has anyone noticed that the units in all civ games are giants? Now if it was a regular sized person trying to shoot over the mountain then I would have a problem with that too. Since the archers are standing in a forest that only goes up to their knees, I have no problem with them shooting over a mountain.

Now you may say that if they are so big, why are mountains impassable to them? The answer is that giants are violently allergic to mountain snow.

You could probably edit the LUA files and take indirect fire out easily with a mod.

I think this is a good idea. I just don't like the promotion. It shouldn't be achievable for archers. I'd be ok with giving it to artillery, but I'd be ok with removing it entirely.

You can probably remove it from Archers while keeping it for artillery, fwiw. Make sure it doesn't nerf Longbows, though.

OK, all the people complaining about archers firing over mountains on this side. Good.
Now, all the people complaining about spearmen no longer able to beat tanks on that side. Good.
Now FIGHT!

Well, if you had a LOT of spearman, they could kill a tank...

Archers can shoot over an area large enough to be a city metropolis. Per the 2 hour preview, they can shoot over ocean that is anywhere from 12 to 20 miles across (from Africa to the Sinai Peninsula across the Gulf of Suez). They can fire over enough farmland to support however many citizens which is supposed to be a representation of thousands of people.

My point: Mountains are just part of it. If you are looking for any semblance of realism you might want to look for another game (or mod).
