okay, I'm trying out these guys and right now I can't decide on what trait to choose for the first adaptive trait trigger.

I did look at that Grigior guide further down, but it's a bit outdated, and it doesn't really give any ideas on which traits to choose.

edit: nm, he does on the first post there, but still, it is an outdated guide. Also, I think I'll go charismatic, give those adventurers a boost.

Charismatic and Raiders are both good choices for early hero promotion. If you are feeling lazy, Creative saves some trouble building Obelisks... really, it's something of a situational choice.

When in doubt, I'd probably go with Charismatic, though, like you've concluded.

1st switch: Fin
2nd: Org
3rd: Cha

One thing I found when playing as Perpentach and got Charismatic, is that it seems to be retroactive. That is, if you have a level, say, 7 warrior, and then you get Cha. without the warrior gaining any XP, he'll get some promos because the game now sees him as a level 8 or 9 (don't know the exact #'s). So don't feel like you're missing out if you don't go Charismatic right away - just do so before you go to war and use those adventurers.

I usually go Arcane/Financial, Organized, Charismatic.
First switch depends on how my economy is doing, if I'm lagging behind in research I'll go Financial, if not then Arcane to get some adepts in preparation for late-game Domination archmages/liches. Organized to get CPs up in my major production cities, and wherever else they might be useful. Charismatic to boost my mages/adventurers a few more levels.

And yes, Charismatic is retroactive. I believe this is because the game only keeps track of 2 things, level and total XP. Level determines what the XP thresholds are and how many promotions remain, so when Charismatic lowers the thresholds the unit gains a few promotions.

I'll definitely be trying Raiders first on Cassiel or Varn at some point, then. That could be hugely entertaining.

i like to start with agressive, to put the free combat1 into play. depending on the situation it makes early wars a lot easier. once you have your first batch of promoted units to run with the (hero)pack its raider or financial for me, depending on the situation.

Raiders is good. While I did not switch to it in my Grigori game (Happiness issues nearly the entire game --- that map was short on luxuries), it was a consideration when the heroes hit the 100 xp cap from barbs. Raiders, Valor and a joined Great Commander let you pass the cap.

Side comment: Adaptive is a fun trait. It gives you strategic flexibility. In my Varn game I got more mileage out of it owing to a horrible start which forced me to change my planned victory condition. The original plan was Altar victory, so the first switch was going to be Organized for the Courthouses/Command Posts, then Philosophical for the Great Prophets. Thanks to the RND number generator being especially evil that game, I was behind both in expansion and tech. So I decided I'd have to Axe Rush the Clan being they were my nearest neighbors. The trait changes were:

1. Aggressive (for the build up)
2. Charismatic (for the war)
3. Organized (for digesting the conquest)
4. Organized (Still digesting ... killed a 2nd civ.)
5. Philosophical (Finally! But by this time it was easier to go for the religious victory.)

@ a_Hamster: Do you mean Alter victory?

O, missed that part.

Well Cassiel has the same trait, so it can be applied in a similar way.

I think Magister also missed the part where he said he was playing Varn.

How do you go for a religious victory as an agnostic civ?
I was playing as Varn Gosam of the Malakim. That was a more instructive example of using Adaptive than my Grigori game where I switched to Charismatic on turn 96 and never left it.

@Darksaber1: No, religious victory. That late in the game I wasn't generating Great Prophets quickly enough (or any other GP for that matter), so I gave up on my original plan to go for the Altar victory and just went for Religious victory. Now if the Malakim could use the Grigori world spell, then that might have been a different matter ... ;)

I thought you were trying for a religius victory with the Grigori.

Charismatic with adventurers... I've never thought about it that way.

In fact, after 100XP, if I then cast valor, stick to charismatic, and then go to war, I might actually gain enough levels to free Brigit.
