I have Win7 pro x64 as my OS
16Gb RAM
Z68 pro3 Motherboard made by Asrock
Intel i7 2600 3.4GHtz CPU
nVIDIA GTS 450 video made by EVGA

I purchased Civ4 "Game of the Year" edition v1.61 and Intalled it fine, was playing fine, until there was like 54 moves left, thought I would start over on a new field, but decided to "Patch" the game first to v1.74 before I did.

I patched fine, but when the game starts now it has the "missing D3DX9_32.dll" problem I've been here reading about, I tried the fix and it didn't work. I re-booted my machine, it still comes up missing. BTW, I have DirectX 10 installed, but I found the DirectX install on my CD also so I used that once too, and it still doesn't work.

I then tried to re-install the game, says it's already installed with v1.74 and that it would reinstall the older v1.61, click ok it says same thing. Suggests to uninstall first.

I tried to uninstall, it errors saying something is missing, I don't recall.

How do I ? :
-uninstall this game so I can reinstall it?

-How can I patch this game so its up to date, without messing it up again?

-Is it possible to save my old saved game files and transfer them?

Thanks for any advice....

I have read the "Install on Win7 32_64" here and will probably do so next time, but I want to delete it first in its entirety.

This is the latest install the most recent version ofDirectX 9c from Microsoft, the one on the disc will be very old.

If you do still unistall then yes follow the instructions in the thread, the run as administrator is particularly important and a different install directory is important for running mods sucessfully.

If you go the uninstall route try the following which is for Civ 4 complete but pick what is needed for the game in your pack as I can't remember if GOTY is just vanilla civ 4 or includes any of the expansions.

Just copy any save files to a folder somewhere else and move them back after reinstall.

Uninstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :
Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files. On 64 bit OS Program Files will be Program Flies (x86)).

Thanks Furiey for responding, I tried to go back to the restore point that was made just before the patch was installed and it reset everything. So the game is running with v1.61 now.

I'm using Win 7, so everything you pointed out is under the <user> folder now, and I've found most of it.

My system says I have DirectX 11 installed, I suppose installing 9c won't change anything?

I'm still going to try the uninstall and then the custom install tips for patching.

I didn't realize this game was that old, still got me hooked.:crazyeye:

9c is seperate from 11 so although you will probably have the very latest 11 installed you will still need to install the latest 9c

The interesting thing is you're now the second person I've seen say that 1.61 works on W7, in the past it would not work at all without patching to 1.74 and that was the case when I installed on W7 x64.
