Hi all, have upgraded my desktop from WinXP to Win7 and have finally found some time to start doing some xml work.

Unfortunately the first file I've made any changes to I can't save as I get a message saying

Save failed.
Please check if this file is opened in another program.

I only have Notepad++ open in one instance, only have the file i'm working on open and the Mod that the file is for is not running.

Is there some special setting I need to change in Notepad++ to enable me to work on files and save them on Win7?

Sounds likea combination of the UAC (User Account Control) security and Civ being installed in the Program Files folder.

Windows, since Vista, does not like for you to modify files in some locations, like Program Files. This is a nice security feature which prevents bad things from happening. But it can get in the way of modding.

If that is where Civ is installed this is probably the problem. You should be able to save the file someplace else, to a location not protected by the UAC like to the desktop, and then manually move the file to where it goes.

The ideal solution (assuming this is, in fact, the problem) is to re-install Civ someplace else, like into some folder you create yourself. If it is not in one of the monitored locations the UAC stuff will not interfere with your file editing.

Another solution is to run Notepad++ as Administrator. And any other program you want to use to directly modify files in the protected location. Note that the game itself, when using BUG, can try to modify files in the mod (the user settings for BUG are generally stored in the mod's location in the UserSettings folder) which requires you to run Civ as Administrator for it to work and not keep having messages about not being able to write those files scroll up the screen.

You can turn off UAC, but that is not really a good plan.

Installing the game someplace else is best.

I've opted for this version as it's quicker and easier for me.

Thank you both for your help.
