 I dont believe this.
I started a new game on civ the other day. i changed the Babylonians into the Pheonicians. and i was on a random map. At Prince level.
i started on an island myself near a continenet seperated between the Egyptians, the Indians and the Greeks.
now by 1990 i was THE nation, each of my cities, 12 in total had above 10 population units.
and i had 3 mech infantry and an armour n EVERY city, AND i was Democracy at war with EVERYONE cause they ALL jealous. hehe. :D
Anyway. I captured Mycenae and Cairo. Also defended them with 3 mech infantries and 2 armours each.
now no other nation on the planet had advanced weapons, they all had muskets and knights.
Greece attacked Mycenae with a LEGION and destroyed ALL my mech infantry AND the armours!
That ONE legion!
Thats why i stopped playing, a crappy out of date unit can easily defeat a very advanced unit in Civ 1.

This is exectly why they changed the rules of combat in Civ2 to include hit points and firepower, while still allowing you to use old Civ1 combat rules if you wanted.

But what do you do? If you don't like it, you can save before each battle. But if you do that, you can win every battle if you choose to.

Well, some things still live on... like the Spear vs. Tank! :D

But, yeah, I remember those odd battles. Even a Spear (Phalanx) vs. a Battleship!!!! Now *THAT'S* a sight to see!

I never stopped, nor do I think I could :) I even take all 3 versions(using civ2 MGE in place of regular civ2, civnet in place of civ1, PTW in place of civ3) with me EVERY time I go somewhere. I play on average 8 hours a day and even more sometimes. Right now I have a civ1(civnet) game going. I'm the americans and it's just starting out. I also have a civ2 game as the egyptians going right now and I'm playing peacefully w/a power democracy going and I'm first in most areas. I've got a PTW game going but i'm not playing it right now.

I can't live w/out civ.....in fact, I've kept dialup for so long so I can play civ while downloading and waiting for large graphics to load. It's my escape when life gets crazy, and life just keeps getting crazier.

My name is david, and I'm a civfanatic.

I used to do it, and let my battleships crush Babylonian cities, reloading when they were destroyed. So I could win in Emperor level. Until I realized battleships DON'T make city walls useless, contrary to my belief. (I reloaded because the battle results seemed unfair)
Clearly I was cheating.
If you save berfore a fight, you are cheating, you must accept the hard law of civ: a small unit has a GOOD chance of defeating a big one. (Odds like 1/12 are still risky).
The problem of lmsw08233 is somewhat but not entirely unrealistic. What a movie it would make: The Legion of Heroes!
But sometimes, you REALLY wonder if the PC is not cheating himself, always winning battles you always lose.

Yeah like when my battleship lost an attack on a catapult!

Indeed the civ1 combat rules are not very advanced which makes for some pretty strange results, but not always bad, as I can remember an emperor game were I defeated an English knight with my diplomat! :D. But I can also remember one where I lost an artillery (be it a non-veteran) on an enemy diplomat. :(

I guess that's also some of the charm of the game though...

Dont get me wrong I play it from time to time still but it just annoys the life outta me that a stupid legion defeated a mech infantry, now correct me if im wrong does a mech infantry not have a MUCH higher defense than the legion has an attack so how in the world can it defeat a mech infantry LOL.

The same way spearmen defeat tanks :)

The battle system has been known to produce some crazy results but hey, that's half the fun!!

In fact, I'm pissed that they removed simplified combat from civ3 w/out heavy modding.

hmm well in my opinion its not so completly bad that a spearmen can defeat tanks...that makes it a little bit easier for the far behind civs to survive a little bit easier :)

I believe it works like this:
The PC makes a "ball" for each Attack point and each Defence point. It puts all the balls in a basket and (randomly, we hope) picks a ball. If it is a Defence ball, the attacked unit wins. If it is a Attack ball, the offending unit wins.

So:
Legion ***
Inf Mech ******
With no modifiers (veteran...), it seems 1/3 - 2/3!

I think this system is just fine, but to have less outrageous results, the numbers should be modified: much more for a modern unit.

In the exemple:
Legion 3
InfMech 40
It would be less likely that the legion win
