Now lets take some phonecalls...

I love when the caller's point is so mundane and illogical that the host simply says something to the effect of:

"Thanks for that point John... onto the next caller... we have Peter on the line from..."

Yeah, I dont know how the hosts keep themselves from saying "Thanks for wasting everyones time with your nonsense John, you jackass." CSPANS ratings would go through the roof if they started doing that.

The echo in here is deafening can you guys please turn your TV/radio down in the back ground.

My favorite, which Veritass already pointed out is: "Hello...?" "Can you hear me?" "Hello, are you hearing me?"

Why shouldnt they be able to hear? Phone technology is pretty well understood at this point inst it? Its like the caller just discovered phones that morning, and is still amazed how they work:rolleyes:

Well they are pretty amazing, and I'm pretty sure most people don't know how they work. I love the "Long time listener, first time caller" line.

What I also hate is that when the reporters ask some random dude in the street about the current economical/political situation.

If I want advice from the man in the street, I'll go to the pub, thank you very much. If I'm watching a news network (not that I do anymore), it's to get the opinion of an expert.

Oh yeah that one really pisses me off too. Especially when the live broadcasts do not work and you can't get hold of that reporter a couple of block away.
I mean, it's not as if we just discovered broadcasting, and it's not as if it's the first time ever they do a live broadcasting, yet the frequency of the mistakes is appaling.

Yeah who the hell cares how many times they called before? What does that have to do with anything? What exactly are they expecting to happen when they mention that, balloons and confetti falling from the ceiling in the TV studio, while the host gets on unicycle and pedals around honking a horn?

@Masq, agreed about man on the street interviews.

The sad fact is (and anyone who's ever worked with the general public will back me up on this), most of the people walking around out there are abyssmally stupid.
My first job was in retail at a drug and discount store that was open 365 days a year. Some of my favorite questions:
  • (After walking into the store on Christmas Day) Are you open today?
  • (Writing a check on Christmas Day) What's the date today?
  • Which of these Chia Pets do you think my grandson will like the most?

Don't even get me started on my years in telephone Tech Support.

Sports Talk gets no play whatsoever on my Radio. It's the worst form of Radio Programming available. For all the reasons you state and some more besides. Again, its a forum for absolutes to battle it out.
Well, sports talk radio at around 2 AM is mostly civil, actually. At least it was whenever I listened to WFAN in New York.

Veritass that was great.

Whomp: Hi Bozo? First time caller.
(echo from car radio) Hi Bozo? First time caller.
Bozo: Uh...could you turn your radio down.

The biggest issue of the radio on while calling is not the echo that a radio host might hear, but the delays that take place (five, seven seconds) that mess up the conversation if it's being replayed and confuses everyone.

Funny how many long time listeners have to be told to turn their radios down.

Hannity and Colmes?

But still, with the point at hand, yes, people are idiots on talk radio. I remember one time there was a news anchor from Chicago who never puts spin on his news stories on the radio as a guest of some show. One caller called in and said that we should let every single person who wants to come to America, legal or not, in. The news anchor proceeded to heckle him for about a minute, calling him a disgrace to this country and a complete idiot. Quite satisfying.

And I live in the Chicago area, and listen to morons every day. Sometimes, I wonder why they don't have someone talk to the callers before they are put on the air. I have heard quite a few people embarass themselves badly because they are so stupid. Often times they simply call in after work, after listening to ten minutes of the discussion at hand, and then repeat what has already been said.

Why can't we just shoot the hosts?

So you're saying that stupid people like me have no right to be on the radio? Sorry, just realized you like ND. Never mind.

No, I wasn't saying that the hosts are morons, I was saying that the people who call in aren't very intelligent, not the hosts. And not everyone is dumb. There are some people who do actually have intelligent things to say to add to the discussion.

Yeah, it is like radio hosts and their shows are too poor to employ
secretaries to screen out the drunks and incoherents.

The political talk show hosts say they don't have screeners so they're not accused of being biased in choosing their phone calls.

Equal opportunity for stupidity ;)

I actually see that as a good reason to NOT watch these shows. If you're serious about what you're discussing, then you should not allow anybody into your debate.
It's nice to give people the false impression that their lunatic opinion matters, but
a. more often than not, only people that are strongly vocal about their opinions will call, giving a false impression to what the average position is
b. do you want to inform or entertain? I'm fine with both, don't just pretend to do one when you're doing the other.
