Howdy,

What are the conditions to totally demolish a city with nukes?

I was playing a game last night as the Inca on Emperor. I had planned a domination win and had fought a few very difficult battles against Cathy to take her capital. I took Cathy's second city, St. Petersburg, which was full of wonders. After I captured the city, she used a nuclear bomb (airplane) on her former city and took the population down to 4. Dumb.

We made a peace treaty for about 15 turns so I could recover, and I attacked her again to take the capital. After sending all of my units into her territory, she launched a nuclear missile at St. Petersburg. The city was simply not there anymore.

I've never seen a nuke take out a city entirely. I always thought the nuke would destroy population, buildings, and units, but not remove the city from the map. Is this even possible? I had quick combat turned on, which is such an extreme opposite of inconvenience from watching slow battles. I did a reload to see what happened, but all I saw was the city blink out of existence. I wish there was a "quicker combat but still know what's happening" mode.

Yeah it is very possible. I accidently lost a city that I really wanted by nuking it too many times. I believe its twice, or nuking a city below a certian population theshold. Of course capitals can never be raised.

good question. i suspect it's at a certain population, if no one provides a hard number i'll do some testing tonight to figure it out. it may be defined somewhere in the xml too

it appears to be 4 population and lower get razed.
there is some randomness in how much population is cut via a nuclear missile (around 70%), so that may not be a completely hard rule (there may be variability at 4 or 5 pop) but all my samples razed at 4, survived with 2 pop left at 5.

also note that atomic bombs can't raze even 1 pop cities.

Note: Only the nuclear missile may destroy cities entirely.

Cities cannot be destroyed if they are/were an original capital or citystate.
Cities can still be destroyed if they have wonders in them (be careful with those nukes).
Cities lose population and health when hit.

In my experience, it has usually taken 2 nuclear missiles to remove a city from the map, but nuclear missiles are completely capable of doing so; enough of them can blast a very small civ completely out of existance (except for a 1 pop, fallout surrounded, buildingless and pitiful capital).

if the city that has wonders in them gets raized.
why cant we rebuild that wonder somewhere else?
it says one wonder but if its burned :P we should be allowed to build 1 unless someone does it first lol
