Hey guys,

Long time fan of the series here, excited about the new Civ 5, but with some mixed feelings about what we know.

I for one always enjoyed having several nuclear submarines, stacked with nuclear weapons lurking around the map late in the game, i know.. i know... a cold war thing  Will i be able to do this with the upcoming Civ 5? There needs to be more focus on the cold war era in the game, it was such an important time in history. If developers are reading this ( see the movies the day after, threads, crimson tide and other movies dealing with nuclear war )

1. More Cold war era features, small islands randomly placed on earth map for nuclear weapons testing ( during manhattan research) , some eyecandy and newspaper reports about nuclear weapons being developed by various nations. More Cold War please please please . In civ 4 the time period came and went too quickly. more gametime in this age if possible.

2. Nuclear war, how about some eyecandy after an impact on an enemy city. See the movies The day after, you feel almost sick . Would be cool to attack an enemy with nuclear war but at the same time "feel sick" that you just did that. Random eyecandy of devestations impacts newsreports, so important.

What do you think guys? Any thoughts on this :scan:

in cIV, by the time everyone had nuclear weapons the game was unplayable... declaring war meant destroying everything you built up a 4000 years, your cities, your entire invading army blown away in one turn... no more tactic no more fun. a cold war, would be a very boring time to play... everyone sitting in their borders, building up military they will never use, cause it would lead to world destruction...
They have to be very careful how to implement nukes... using them (or even trying to build them) should maybe lead to the whole world turning against you and they should be a lot harder to obtain... maybe less realistic would do good in this case, the world has so many nukes, we could bomb everything to stoneage... no more "cool" world war with nukes.

ah and please, no more global warming.

Agreed, its my hope that the game engine will be better equipped to handle large maps with large armies...

There has to be some form of global warming late in the game, perhaps not as aggressive as in previous versions , but still..

I don't know. I don't think it "needs" more focus on the cold war period, as the cold war was a result of a confluence of factors specific to our history. I consider Civ more like a "what if" than a history simulator.

I like modern era combat. That's the part of playing Civ I most anticipate is the when I start to develop jets and tanks. So I agree with tmaxim about the fun of playing a modern war. However, I rarely use nukes though I do build them so that I can hit back any country that uses them on me. Most of my wars in the modern age are conventional.

With that said, I do like some of tmaxim's ideas. I have posted before in the Civ 5 Wish List thread that we should have more in-depth diplomacy and that we should have a mass media to provide a narrative to world events. There could be an icon you click on that shows a newspaper that tells what happened during the last turn. Both of these elements would provide the backdrop for an international crisis from beginning to end similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Example: a nation you are not currently at war with, but are not friendly towards, places its ICBM's (assuming they can be re-based) in a city-state close to your country thus placing the missiles within striking range of your nation. The newspaper could report on this and you and the other country will negotiate some type of withdraw of the nukes. If there is no agreement, you will have to decide to make a pre-emptive strike on the city state to destroy the nukes or you can do nothing and will have to just pray you don't get nuked or you can find a city-state close to the rival and get an agreement to place nukes there.

thungrim,

the "what if" side of the game is what makes the civ series one of the most replayable games of all time. I just hope some of us oldtimers will still feel at "home" when number five is out.

Aspe4,

Now theres an idea for sure! I rarely use nukes myself, but have great fun in having them as a deterrent. I just hope civ5 will be able to give these weapons just that, deterrent and that other nations in diplomacy know that i have them. And yes, important news headlines as newspaper announments like in the older version of civ. oh, and some forgotten island somewhere on the map for weapons testing, explode one nuke, newsflash, "china detonates their first nuclear device" and so on... Like you said Aspe4, " china deploys tactical nuclear weapons too close to major european cities, tensions rise" and so on.... Would be a blast :nuke:

Now, please fellow fans, read: Im not saying this should be a nuclear war game, but atleast implement the time era and make it somewhat more important.

It's very realistic that warfare is impossible between nuclear superpowers without armageddon.

But no one can tell whether there will be a working SDI/ ballistic defense in the future, so IF civ features "limited future technlogy" as someone said they should better make their SDI version effective to re-allow combat.

Generally, the best thing about the implementation of future techs is that modern war concepts (submarines, carrier strike groups, amphibious warfare, paratroopers, ...) have more gameplay effect! most civ4 games are over BEFORE carriers enter the stage, so they rarely fight in an important war.
