Hej!

I’m playing on a huge map against 12 AI players. Is there a way to change this to, say 18, AI players?

not after the game already started, at least that i know of. if you mean when you start a new game, yes. you have to use "custom game" instead of "play now". then on the set up screen, scroll down on the list of players and change the bottom player from "closed" to "AI". there won't be 18 players shown at first, but when you add one then a new "closed" one gets put on the bottom of the list, so you just keep doing that until you have 18.

It is if you're playing Warlords (or BTS). If you're playing Vanilla Civ, either you hadn't discovered them or you were playing the Revolutions mod.

I'm playing BTS.
So this means that I can start up with 18 civs and end up with a few more?
But is it max 18 civs when I start playing?

You cant' have more than 18 Civs on a map. So if you have 18 at one moment, no more colonies until one dies.
Really? My interpretation is that even after they die, they are still taking up a "player spot". I could easily be wrong though.

I usually play with 15 players on a huge map now so that up to 3 colonies can be made.
But I usually have 2-3 opponents die fairly early in the game. Either by my hand or by another AI/barbs.

Can someone verify this for certain? I would much prefer starting the game with 18 AIs then a colony can be founded for each one that has died.

But what is ”colonies”? Who ”makes” them? Is it the biggest (highest scores) civs? And is it just AI played civs that can have colonies?

I said the same thing. I did not say that you cannot have more than 18 civs in a game, but on a map (meaning "at the same moment", even if it was not 100% clear)

In any case, this is indeed possible, but it leads to bugs (new colonies take some settings of the old spot's civ: war state, culture... strange things happen); with Bhruic patch, colonies can't take anymore spots of previously dead civs, or at least, this is something I read a few hours ago.

Simna > Colonies are a feature of BTS. The idea is that if you have at least 2 cities on a new landmass, you can turn any number of these cities (but not 1) into a colony. A new civ will be created, taking control of these cities, and being your vassal.
