number of units limit?

As I remember it was 2048 units. For one civilization the limit is about 1900.

With Hex-editing it is theoretically possible to raise the limit to 65 536. But practically is achieved only 2300 units in ToT as much as I know.

So, it's pollible to have over 2,000 units on the map simultaneously? But, WHY would anyone need this many!? Is 1,500 not enough? Good grief, if anyone has that many units, they must have WAY too much spare time.

Hey, MG2, I had that many on a game I played on Warlord level on a giga-map and I still couldn't deafeat my rivals, the Greeks. Some of us empire builders enjoy thousands of units :). But that is just my .00000002 cents ;).

MG2, you'd be surprised at how easily you can place 1000 units on a large map. As for needing that many units, have a look at Captain Nemo's Red Front - at the harder levels it's common for the max unit limit to be broken.

Well, perhaps it's just hard for me to imagine because I prefer mid-size maps, and tend to keep small, powerful armies. Furthermore, I don't have the giga-map option in my version.

Hi guys,

actually I am currently creating a MP game for up to 7 players.

It would be cool if anybody could tell me how to increase the number of possible units on the map (say to 4000 to 5000) as numbers are a big problem in a stalemate between the powers. :king:

MG2, there is a program that can solve your problem. First off there are gigamaps of the real Earth that you can download regardless of your version, but with Julius Brenzaida's "No Limits" utility (click here to download) which will allow you to generate random gigamaps, not to mention that your gold an population limits will be unreachably higher as well. :)

I know that this may be bumping old threads, but I can't really find one that solves my problem. You said that by hex-editing you can increase the unit limit, so is it logical for me to assume that you can hex-edit the city limit as well, or that there even may be a utility for changing it? There must be some file somewhere that indicates a 255 limit, so would one simply be able to rewrite it to 300 or 400? I have already put up a thread addressing my question, but I thought I would put it here too since it seemed relevant.

This is a map of my scenario thus far, but I have reached the limit of 255 and I still have to build all the cities on North and South America!

Well, thanks Darius. As for your map, you have a ton of cities in Europe. Try deleting some of them. It looks like Europe may have a larger population than Asia, which is inaccurate anyway.

Well of course that will have to be my only option soon, but I think it'll only be more inaccurate to get rid of them. First off I'm using a population database as Exile does, so all the cities do have completely accurate populations, and obviously the Asian cities are individually larger than those in Europe so the populations are accurately represented. For instance, many cities in Europe would have populations of 5 to 10, while Asian cities are consistently from 15 to 35.

The reason Europe is so crowded is just a usual problem with making a global map, where Europe's density of population is hard to recreate as the map of Europe is so much smaller than usual. The density is there to demonstrate the difficulty involved in conquering Europe, to simply recreate density better, and to recreate the region's industrial strength compared to other areas, whether dense or not.

If there truly is no way to change the limit (responses to my thread have informed me that there is a technical reason that it cannot be hex-edited, after many many many tries by some of the best hex-editors here), then indeed I will have to spread out the cities to what I find to be an unrealistic point.
