nutrient and mineral restriction problems

early on in the game you can only produce a limited amount of nutrients and minerals on base squares until you research appropriate technologies like gene splicing.

or so the game tells me...

i've never had this problem, right from turn 1 i can produce 7 minerals on squares with the rocky/road/mineral combination, and 4 food with farm/rainy/nutrient.

i had figured this was just a bug in the programming which affected everyone... up until now when i started reading some people's strategy guides, where they gave tips on terraforming up until when the restrictions come off.

has anyone else had my problem? i'd quite like to have restrictions if thats how the game was meant to be.

my version of smac is not from the original production run, if that makes any difference

thanks.

The restrictions do not apply to bonus squares (bonus nutrients, bonus minerals, bonus energy) for the factor of production that the bonus applies to. That is why the bonus squares are very desirable pre-restriction lifting.

funny
i just joined to ask practically the exact same question
Ok, here's the scenario
I'm Dierdre, leader of the Gaians
The year is 2220
I have 18 bases and am overwhelmingly the dominant faction
I HAVE researched gene splicing and am fairly domininant on the research end
Difficulty level: Librarian
Annyway.....
Built about 6 thermal boreholes, some near home base, one at home base, some far away, on some combination of moist/rainy or rolling/flat terrain
All boreholes produce 2 mineral, and 2 energy and there is a black, shadowy outline around them.
Unfortunately, I searched the forums, google and the datalinks for the words "black shadowy outline," with no results

Anyone have any advice on this?

Gene Splicing is the tech that removes the restrictions for nutrients. However, you need to research Ecological Engineering and Environmental Economics to remove the restrictions for minerals and energy, resp.

The "black shadowy outline" indicates that the square produces less than it should because the proper tech hasn't been researched yet.

thanks my olmec bro!

:goodjob:

i <3 berkeley, especially the indian joint on university ave (i think it's called indian palace)

f_ck LA, if ur goin to cali, berkeley is where it's at!

I also believe that difficulty plays a factor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at lower difficulties, the maximum you can get is 3 as opposed to 2, before needing the techs, right?
