Odd Sound Issues.

Hey, I have seen this question asked before, but not awnsered. When I start Civ IV everything runs fine through the intro, with full sound. However, past that point, once I get to the loading screen, or when I'm in the game, I get no Nimoy, no music, nothing. Everything else works fine for me (which is surprising since my geforge4 4200 graphics card is a dinosaur) The soundcard I'm using is definitely outdated, it's a creative sound live card, last driver updates in 2002...however, it works fine for everything else I have, including the intro to Civ IV. Is there any way to get music/sound to work? Or do I need to go out and buy an audigy sound card or something.

Thanks!

Check your civ4 .ini file (My Documents->My Games->Civilization 4) look for this line: "; Enable Audio
AudioEnable = 1" make sure it says 1 not 0. Sometimes the game changes your settings for some reason. Also check the audio options in the ingame menu. Make sure the default audio playback device is set to your soundcard. Failing that, come back and post your dxdiag.

All good suggestions Rob, unfortunately I've already tried them all. The Audio is set to 1 (I even tried setting it to 0 then back to 1, just so I had tried em both) My dxdiag is working perfectly, the wonder videos play with sound...everything but the in-game music and sound effects work, it's driving me nuts.

I've tried most of the audio options on the in game menu; mono, stereo, surround sound, all the discretes etc.

I guess I'm really just trying to find out whether this is a game problem or a sound card problem before I decide to spend the money for a Audigy.

Thanks for the suggestions though, I'm hoping this is just some small thing im overlooking.

Just a workaround but it might work.

In game options, set the audio option to system config.

Then download and install VDMSound v 2.0.4

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound

Right click on civ shortcut and select run with vdmsound.

Well, it was worth a try...didn't work unfortunately. I'm really starting to go nuts here, why would the intro/wonders movies work with sound and the Nimoy/background music/ sound-effects not work? This game is driving me insane...it's such a small thing, and yet it makes a big differance in gameplay.

Wow, I've made a new and stranger discovery. I started my computer in safe mode, and found the 'sounds' file under assets...when I have my computer in normal mode, however, the file doesn't show up. I created a shortcut to sounds while in safe mode to the desktop...and through that I can play all of the games sounds...in Itunes, media player, etc.

I tried to put this shortcut into assets...but no luck. For some reason my sound file is getting downloaded...but not accessed by the game. I'm not techy enough to fix this...all ideas are appreciated.

It doesn't show up?

Time to thoroughly scan your system for viruses, spyware, and their kin.

I have exactly the same problem using an SB Extigy. Full sound through the intro, then nada. Oddly, when I shut down to the desktop, I sometimes get a sudden burst of background sound- birds singing, or what have you, just before the app closes. (DXDiag log attached, though I'm not expecting much joy, given how buggy this whole thing seems to be)

Everything else works fine- I doubt your problem is a virus, though checking's not a bad idea.
