First, a major crack appeared and now they have appeared all around, spewing at least 500 cubic metres of toxic mud every day.

An area of 12 square kilometres has now been covered and four entire villages have been affected, displacing almost 8,000 people.

For some reason this reminds me of 'Paint your wagon' when, in the pursuit of gold, Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood undermine (literally) their town.

It happened in Indonesia (Java) and the company responsible was Australian. Now that's going to smooth international relations!

Another reason we need a cleaner energy source.

I know a very clean energy source! Uranium. Seriously, if we abandon oil, how are we going to pwoer our cars? Solar? Please! Solar Energy is inefficient. Wind power? Nope, same as Solar.
Uranium is the way to go it seems

I thought the whole area around Java was geologically unstable?

Isn't drilling for oil in a volcano area a bit risky?

Well, IIRC, Bush has given funding for hydrogen cars and I assume that scientists will eventually develop efficient solar power. Nuclear is probably the best source for power plants.

Wonderful, this an Amazing amount of energy!@!
Where will we put it?
.....Let's get the government to hollow out Nevada's largest mountin and have them fill it with our waste at the tax payers expense.
How will we get it there? lets just drive right by people's houses, there's no way will have a wreck!

Government: now that we have helped out those fine boys in nuclear energy business, lets keep other countrys from getting nuclear power.

Of course the average age of a nuclear reactor is 22years old.

You don't make an omlet without breaking some eggs. So do you want power, or not?

Drill, drill, drill!! -Hopefully the black stuff comes up. But, not always. And occasionally, you get something... else. Oh, well.

Hydrogen is the future, btw. Eventually. And what a wonderfully glorious future it will be...

No. Where do we get our hydrogen from?

There's a number of options. For example; electrolysis of water, or reaction of water and methane at high temperature, or partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, etc.

Some of the methods do require oil, but not all of them.

nuclear power is cleaner and reduces our dependence on oil. I believe it will be better for us.

I thought we were running out of Uranium even more quickly than out of oil.

They actually had a prototype on History or Discovery channel the other day, unfortunately the sticker price would be ove $100,000 american if it went into production, plus there is nowhere to fill it up.

Electrolysis is energy hungry and expensive and thus is hardly a completely clean way to obtain the fuel wither, fussion is the future if only we can get it to work. Seawater and lithium as fuel sources. Clean and self sustaining, although nothing is ever totally clean, at least there's precious little radioactive waste.
