I want to installa second hard drive in my pc... only problem is that when i try, it never registers it. I go into my BIOS, and it says that the primary 0 is the 20G that has my operating system on it, and the primary 1 is the new 40G.

But when i go to my computer it doesnt show. makin me a little angry.

Other option would be that i want to take all the ino off my 20G..and put it on the 40G... how do i do that? Please help, im alot frustrated.

You're not having a master/slave conflict, are you?

Make sure your jumpers are set correctly. If set to auto, the IDE cable will determine which one is master and which is slave...

Or perhaps your problem is slightly more complicated. Some more details may help with the search for a solution.

well there is no jumper in my main one. and i set the 2nd one as slave according to the instructions on the HDD. Alone the first one works fine. If i was to put the jumper in the first one on master would the 2nd one automatically think its a slave??

Now i might tell u that this is an older PC, Its a Compaq Deskpro Es seriers.. I got it for $15.00 and its been great. Celeron 500, and i got 390ish MB of ram.

Win XP Pro is the one that i need initially and then im going to partition 10G off for Linux. THATS another story.
And Ill have to do this again in April when i get my new one!

Both probably need to be jumped. Different brands act differently, but it sounds like you need a jumper for both drives.

That's probably your problem right there. The old mobo probably can't handle 40 gig HDDs.
I remember a friend of mine trying to get a 40 gig HDD to run on his old 350 MHz K6-2 board and it didn't work because the board chipset just was too old.

If you want a low cost but still good linux box/server buy a used xbox from ebay. With the new one out they should only cost around $75 and come with a 733 MHz CPU and a DVD drive :D

I just want to add my agreement here. Western Digital I know liked to send out their drives which, if a single drive, would be fine with no jumper set. IF you added a second drive, you had to expressly jumper one as master and the other as slave. You couldn't just leave the master unjumpered anymore.

Since the BIOS setting is alright. You need to set partitions and format your new harddisk. Try DiskManager or some other disk utilities.

Warning: Don't format your first harddisk by mistake.

The capacity limit is 2.1G, since his computer can handle a 20 gig disk,a 40 gig is a no problem.
The next capacity limit is 137 gig per partition.

Does the drive show up in disk management? (Start>Run, diskmgmt.msc) If so you just need to format it.

It must be painful trying to run XP on a C500....

no it actually works really well

which suprises me too
and heres what i see... makin me real angry this is

The "Disk1" listed there at the bottom is it. Right click on each of the three partitions it's divided into and select "delete logical drive." Once you've done that you should be able to right click and format.

Unless of course you have PartitionMagic or another program you'd prefer to use.

ok once i do that then how do I make it so that its available...and that windows can see it. I also want to use 10Gs for linux...so delete the logial drive and then format it..and windows should see it?

Now that you have a single unpartitioned drive after following the above directions, you need to partition the drive how you want it.

Right click the "unpartitioned space" in disk 1, and select create partition. It will be a primary partition. 10G is 10240 when it asks for what size to make the partition. Don't format it right now. Assign whatever drive letter you want. It will work on it for a minute or 2. When it's finished, wait another 20 seconds then create your other partition/partitions. If you are just making the 2 partitions, when you are selecting the size for the second partition, subtract 8 from the total remaining. It can be primary as well. You should always leave 8 remaining unpartitioned, not enough space to care about, but the disk will be happy. Again don't format it yet. Wait for about 20 seconds after it finishes, then you can begin formatting the partitions. Before you leave the disk manager you will need to make the boot partition active. Right click the 10G partition and select make active. Do not activate any other partitions on that disk.
