Old Western Ranger

Could it be some pathways for the unit's nif or kfm are hardcoded so to speak? I know that can happen for building graphics, so perhaps for units too?

@Ahwaric
Damn, I thought that might be it. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this problem...

@OzzyKP
Thanks. I've actually used your development thread quite a bit to help me with ideas. I hope you are able to fix your problems, it looks like a great mod! :goodjob:

EDIT: @Geo
Just saw your post.
I don't think that units (or any other Vanilla Civ model) have imbedded animations. I know that other ripped models use them, but I don't see why that would screw w/ the model. There might be something wrong with way I nifswapped, but I've no idea. I have had problems with this unit when putting it in Colonization, although nothing like what happened to Ahwaric.
Maybe I'll try to swap him again and see if it yields better results. If not, then maybe I can retry the unit. If that doesn't work, then maybe I'll need to try a different animation...

Hey Ahwaric, try this. I just made it so that this unit uses the Ottoman Janissary animations instead of the Rifleman's. The animations are practically identical, but it fixed the problem I had with my Colonization mod. :)

If anyone else experiences problems, report them here and I'll take down the bad version.

i´m almost sure it will not work in game (checked in nifviewer and the same problem like before). The "problem" is that as you exported your model the model has got an shader skin partition but no shader information, after adding this informations (NiTriShape [i transformed the mesh before - but it should also work without] - in the block details scroll down until you see 'Has Shader', change to yes - below add the sahder name [eg: TCiv4Skinning] and change the unknown value below to '-1') the model showed no errors in nifviewer. No idea why teh model worked on your side - perhaps a difference between the PC and the MAC version considering the way units are displayed :confused:

On another node, as SeZereth created his Govannon for FFH he had the great idea to use this animation for a pistol guy - so i used your model and his animation (with some minor changes on my side - like adding the modern warlord pistol) to created such a unit - would be best as part of your unit package (the unit is a bit stretched while attacking, but i think it´s acceptable). Thank you for making this unit :)
[only a shader version uploaded - and it´s not the original govannon animation - added the weapon effect - for your info if you want to use it as part of a FFH mod]

you only have to change the three values (has shader, shader name, unknown value) - like said it seems that you have created a shader unit and tried to use them a non shader unit which causes trouble (unit deformation or crashes)
[if you export in Blender deactivate create skinpartition if you want non shader units - but afaik in most cases shader units should be have a better performance]

Okay, so can I make up the shader name then if it has an unknown value? I would make shader units, but I don't know how to edit them w/out Nifviewer. Also thanks for the export tip; if I can't figure out shaders w/out Sceneviewer, I'll remember that for next time.

Thanks! :goodjob:

i did the changes in nifscope - you can add the other values (shader name and -1) after setting the has shader flag to yes, i only used nifviewer to show you you the the mesh problem (just in case you already saw the added pic) ;)

Hi Flintlock,

I can't get the Rangers to work, either. A large brown line emanates from the left hand of both the mounted and foot version. The line goes all the way across the screen as long as one of the units is onscreen. Then the game crashes. I do not have the frozen animations option checked.

Unfortunately, I am only running vanilla Civ4 because my laptop doesn't have enough video memory for either Warlords or BTS.

Too bad, I was going to use them for Confederate sharpshooters and cavalry.

Yea, I kinda forgot about this unit... try the attached file; I just followed the_Coyote's instructions. If any of my other units also are causing trouble, let me know and I will fix them.

Anyway this should work, let me know how it goes. ;)

EDIT: Attachment removed.

I tried both the pistol ranger and the Janissary Ranger. The pistol ranger worked fine, but the Janissary had the same problem.

Now that's what I call service! 23 minutes after my post, and you have provided the answer. The Ranger I just tried works perfectly. Now if I could only get the mounted version to work...(hint, hint).

Thanks,

JB
