On Great Depression

Did you make sure you built the mausoleum of mausolus? Also, for Carthage, founding Christianity is a must. I had 4-5 star economy before GAs with North Africa, Egypt and Greece, but expansion just destroyed me. Now with Babylon, I have pathetic economy.

I'm not sure about the numbers, but it seems to me that the GA is just such a huge boost to your economy. If your economy is weak to begin with, the GA is basically 100% of your economy points and when its over, the hit is really rough. If you have a strong economy beforehand, it seems that the landing isn't so bad.

Still, I would like to see the end of a GA not count against your shrinking economy.

No, I still regret not building the mausoleum (don't know who beat me to it, I'm so tired) which could have basically given me 7x4=28! more turns of golden age. But I won anyway despite my instability. (see the domination thread).
The strong economy doesn't take off as much in Carthage because I had to expand really REALLY slowly until I got fascism.

OK, this is ridiculous. I finally stole Economics from the Americans (I'm Maya and they are my vassals), and within 4 turns I go into a great depression. I haven't even had the time to ramp up production! Where is all this excess production suddenly coming from? I had as many if not more cottages around Chicago and New Orleans. And I haven't even gotten replacement parts yet to build any lumbermills.

There really should be a grace period during which if you just adopted economics that you should be free from a great depression, so that in 5-10 turns, if you don't like free economy and got communism, you can switch.

You can't calculate excess production in Civ4
Maybe the system compares your production rates with other countries and if you are much ahead and adopt Free Market you will get Great Depression ?

I cannot be much ahead, I don't even have replacement parts. Germany's got to have more production than me.

Obviously the Great Depression needs to be tweeked. Kind of makes Free Markets unplayable.
