So I started playing Tilted_Axis, Standard, with no time/diplomatic victories. I wasn't exactly trying to go for a domination win, I just wanted to start off decently and see what happens from there. It worked well until I got around the industrial era, and then I almost lost hope because the AI was really catching up to me.
I had a great start. I had 200 points more than the next civilization (in the ranking) about 10 to 15 minutes into the game, and by the mid-game I had literally double the score of the next civilization. It was around there that I saw the AI surpassing me in the tech tree. I didn't exactly notice it, since I had an immense lead in the beginning, but they were catching up and awfully quick.
Two AIs declared war on me, but I did not fight. Instead, I bribed the other AIs to declare war on them. I think one of them was Napoleon, and everybody else declared war on him because I told them to (evil!
) And then he disappeared.
But then I started getting careless and started trading techs all the time because I didn't think they would catch up so fast; I thought I would always maintain the lead in the tech tree, but I was horribly wrong. Then one of the AIs finished the Apollo Program, and I was like "Oh ****!" Then I had to stop researching stupid techs and started researching everything related to the space race, and immediately had all my cities start building SS Casings as soon as it was completed.
I checked the WorldBuilder after it said I won, and it turns out that it was so close, I was actually about 4 turns ahead before another AI would've won, which I think was Asoka? She only had to build the SS Statis Chamber for a few more turns and then she would've won. Whew, thank goodness!
I think the moral of the story is to be careful when trading techs because it almost gave me a loss.
