OoS errors should be your number one priority

Yeah, the title says it all. I love FfH and FF, but it is a bit boring to play offline. This will of course change when you release the scenarios, but i haven't read any updates on them (ever).

Me and my friend have been playing this mod online constantly for about a week now, but it always ends with us getting OoS errors. It can happen at turn 100, or it could happen by turn 280. But it always happens. After some extensive reading on the forum, we have concluded that the problem is that he has XP and i have Vista. This is not a bug thread, and I'm not asking how to solve it (since i know that i can't at the moment). This is a suggestion.

I tried to install the OoS logger, but i don't really understand what "importing the text file to CvEventManager". If you could tell me how to install the OoS logger, i would be happy to help you however i can. This mod might be the best fantasy game since Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Wonders, and i REALLY want to play it online.

The OoS errors are a huge problem. And i know that i'm not the only one having them.

Edit: Also, congratulations on FfH 0.34. I will play this instead of FF, at least until they release another update that is better. It always feels like FF is like the beta to FfH, where the game is not as balanced but with more content. Lairs are much better done in FfH, anyway!

You mean that OOS errors should be YOUR number 1 priority right?

If they are a constant issue for you, and you play Fall Further, then you ought to be posting constant OOS logs so that I can analyze them and discover what is causing the issues. Without a VERY large sample of logs it is impossible to discover where these minor anomalies of the code are hidden. And I personally don't play Multiplayer except once every 3 months or so, and even then typically I don't make it to the point of discovering a religion. So without other players granting me their logs.... I can do nothing to help you.

Anyway... minor rant/reaction to your title and first paragraph aside, you DO mention knowledge of the logger after that. Fall Further has the OOS logger installed already, and in Assets/Python you will find a .txt file with information on where to find the logs once created.

To make the logger work in main FfH you should go to the thread for the OOS logger by Gerikes and it should have more detailed instructions on handling the code there. Link for that thread is in the OOS tracking thread in the Fall Further subforums.

Yes yes, now that i know that the OoS logger should already be installed in FF, I see that the OoS log doesn't even exist. If i had logs i would post them, of course, but unfortunately that is not the case. I will ask my friend to find his logs instead.

Even if you do not play the mod in multiplayer, you can not neglect that it actually IS a very serious problem, not only for me but for everyone who wants to play it online. It would be such a shame to see a work as awesome as this ruined for many dozens of people because of a bug like this.

The logs are useless unless both players (or if the game was a lot of humans, at least 1 player who had the "standard" checksum, and the player who had a different one) post their logs so they can be compared to find what was different in the game.

Each time you get an OOS the log is generated, but it overwrites any previous logs (unless you renamed/moved them). Logs should be found as C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\OOSLog.txt, if you were playing after the patch in which we included the logger (M I think).

And not playing multiplayer myself doesn't mean I place less value on cleaning up the mod to make it possible to avoid OOS issues, it just means that it is impossible for me to debug the OOSs without players giving very detailed reports + logs.

I agree that the OOS problems are the most important issue for MP games, but Xienwolf already stated the depth of the issue at hand. Without the help from the FFH community and posting the logs it is near impossible for them to sort out the multitude of issues that can cause the OOS. I must say that Xienwolf and some others have done a great job with the logs that have been posted recently on the FF forums.

I will note some things that seem to reduce some OOS problems as stated on the forums.

Using XP with Vista appears to cause more OOS issues.

Using Hamachi ( not configured correctly) seems to cause more OOS issues. There was a post in the Hamachi forums about configuring it for Civ4.

Using Gamespy seems to reduce OOS issues ( when you can actually see the other person in the GS lobby)

Seems to happen less when playing on a LAN.

If you are playing through a DI connection, some firewall / router settings seem to affect the OOS issues as well.

Some people have also reported that turning off events in the game option will reduce OOS chances.

Here is a post about OOS issues

After some experimenting, I actually found a solution. I'm on Vista, and for some reason my OS does not want to see me as an admin at some times, especially when doing stuff in C:/

I understood that something was wrong when i didn't get any ooslogs, even though i had encountered them a lot in Fall Further. So, what i did was to move the whole game folder to D:/ instead. Just played a game of about 175 turns without a problem, though it could have just been luck. Anyone who recognizes the situation should try it.

Heh, I play Civ4 mostly in multiplayer (LAN) and all I can say about OOSs is that they are all but the main MP issue. As long as they don't happen once every turn (which can seldom happen with some mods) they really aren't an issue at all, I'd call the a nuisance at most. A few OOSs per game are more than acceptable, just learn to live with them.
