Opinions on FreeCiv?

Has anyone else here tried playing FreeCiv, the opensource Civ (I) version that runs on Linux? I've played in briefly on some of the new distributions that bundle the FreeCiv server and client, and I'm not very impressed. I would think anyone used to any version of Civ II or III would be very disappointed by this.

No, its purely legitimate, and OpenSource (free)...

I playe it, didn't like it... They really need FreeCiv III or at least FreeCiv II, because the CIv I systems are too dated now.

Well, if it's Open Source, there shouldn't be anything stopping anyone from downloading it, and making it better.

You can get FreeCiv here http://www.freeciv.org/download.phtml

Pretty complicate, as most Open Source is, because they don't package things with the end user in mind. For example, the GUI front end is a separate utility

Played it and didn't like it much. There seems to be a derth of people working on graphics for OSS projects - except for FPSers.

I gave it a shot a couple of months ago... It found itself inside the desktop trash can five minutes later.

I have tried Civ-Evolution, a clone of Civ2, but I weren't very impressed. Have yet to try Freeciv.

Boooooo... . I hated it. Why would we play a game from so long ago? That's like SPAM (the food), it may have been amazing and revolutinary at the time but now it just sucks.

Nah, it is just made by people that loved Civ1. Did you know that there are still people out there that play Civ1?

I play Red Baron 1 sometimes. It's released on freeware now.

If I had started Civving when Civ 1 was around, i would probably enjoy it. But now...
