Did the 1/3 cost for Navy ability just surface with the new patch? I don't remember it before.

If so, this may need to be scaled back a bit. I just played the easiest game ever using the Ottomans on an Island map.

A built a few galleys, converted a bunch more and by the time I could build frigates I had a navy of 8-10 ships, most of which with 2-3 promotions because of all the land barbarians I had killed.

I traded some resources for cash, upgraded them to frigates, and proceeded to wipe out all my opponents before they could possibly respond to such an over match. I think I only built 4-5 land units, which were basically just used to finish off each city before I torched them.

The Ottoman 1/3 cost ability coupled with the conversion ability may not be fair on Island maps.

I wouldn't be so fast to write it off. What difficulty are you on?

Just to note, that this is a pretty common deity strategy so the difficulty HE played on really isn't relevant since it's been tested thoroughly by multiple people. It's one of the easier ways to 'cheese' deity IMHO.

All of the civs with naval UUs/UAs dominate the AI on island maps, honestly. You are 100% right that this is fairly cheesy, but Polynesia, Denmark and England are also all pretty cheesy on island maps as well.

Polynesia is particularly bad, imo - you can pretty much hit most of the goody huts on the map before other civs even get off their island, plus stake out many of the best city sites.

and meet all the city states and the 30 gold for finding them.

And have a much larger set of trading partners for RAs, much sooner.

I actually love Polynesia, by the way <3 seriously, they're my favorite Civ added via DLC. They're in a great state balance-wise where they're never totally worthless, can be the best choice based on map, and always play very differently than other civs whether they're OP on a map or not.
