Out of range error

I am a new user to Civilization - infact I just got Civilization 3 Gold Edition (multiplayer) a few days ago and have been trying to install it. When I try to install the game the screen turns blank with the following error message "Sync. out of range".

I have a Windows 98, pentium II PC with 352 MB RAM. I am sure that it meets all the requirements that Civ3 needs. Any help in how to get the game installed will be greatly appreciated.
