Everytime i start civ 3, my monitor goes grey and comes up with "OUT OF RANGE", then goes back to normal when the video intro comes up, then goes back to a grey screen saying the same as before as it loads up the menu.. just sorta puzzles me as it worked on my brothers system with the same video card, same operating system and same video driver. I've tried changing the resolutions and color quality, but it still does the same thing. =x

System:
2.4 ghz Athlon
GeForce 2 w/ newest drivers
256 MB ram
Win XP professional

Running at:

1024x768 resolution (I tried higher)
16 bit color quality (I tried it on 32 bit)
60 hertz Monitor refresh rate

I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer.. thanks in advance.

My mothers PC has a flat screen monitor that did that when I was playing Civ 3 on it; it was Windows XP.
Maybe its just certain monitors and/or Win Xp that does it.

It didnt interfere with my playing Civ 3; does it interfere with you?
If it doesnt I wouldnt worry about it.

it's a long-shot, but try this. Find your .ini file => for example, if you're playing C3C, you'll have to find c:\civilization3\conquests\conquests.ini

Open it (it will open wiht Notepad). At the end of the file, add the line:

KeepRes=1

save the file and try again

otherwise perhaps your monitor is a bit old and can't handle the resolution+refresh rate combination that civ3 requires?

I've seen this happen before, way back before PTW came out. As I recall, it was a refresh problem.

Go to you .ini file like narmox said, and put the line in Refresh=60. I'm thinking this will clear this up.

Is this bad: I can't find my .ini file. In fact, .ini doesn't even show up as a choice when I use search.

EDIT: Even worse: I found it, but putting refresh=60 didn't help.
