outposts

Outposts aren't worth a worker. Workers are your most valuable asset, especially early in the game. They only provide more vision than a unit would if you build the outpost on a mountain. I'd rather have a unit at a chokepoint.

id rather have more workers than a outpost....

I believe that a moderator said that the outposts were meant only to be used in the Elimination mode as an early warning system. They weren't meant to be used in any other modes.

What are "outposts"?

And what game are you using; PTW or Civ3?

Outposts are new in PTW, along with airfields and all that fun stuff :D. They provide you with a stationary object that sits there and increases your view of the world, and cost a worker to build, like colonies. They really have no useful function, since just posting a unit in the area will give you the same effect.

I can't understand why the worker disappears when building one of these structures... It makes no sense!

I agree that on the whole, outposts are mostly a worthless waste of a worker. But I have used a foreign worker before to set one up in a "no man's land" area between myself and the persians during the medieval ages, just to make sure I saw any massing of troops of theirs near my borders so that I wouldn't be caught off guard if they attacked me. Fortunately they didn't do so until much later in the game, but it was useful to me once at least.

An outpost will see through a mountain/hill as if it isn't there. Because of that I have built a total of 2 in the last 12 games i've played... on mountains in the middle of mountains on the edge of my territory...

An outpost dosn't cost you 1 gold per turn to maintain. If it looks like you'll be posting a unit somewhere a long time in a (hopfully) peacefull situation that fact could be benificial.

How about the permanant loss of workforce you have by manning it? It's not as though outposts can see themselves. ;)

Having said that, I really can't see myself ever making one. They are worse than useless.
