This poll is for fun mainly. You can nearly get an oscar for "best supporting houseplant" so why can't we have a few more awards. Unfortunately I can only list 4 choices in the poll, but if a moderator were to read this and felt able to help me out......

White Rabbit award. At the moment people who can't finish their game in time get zero credit for the effort they have put into the game. What if we had the normal submission date, with the usual awards, but then had a later submission date for latecomers, say 2 weeks later? Then people could still submit, get their global ranking points and be able to play for this award, for the highest scoring late game. People who cannot play a full game every month could then play bi-monthly if they wished.

Medallion Man award. Monarch difficulty too easy? S'pose cracker set a slightly more difficult task. Say an OCC 100K win without building wonders, leaving despotism or researching past Chivalry, (I'm joking about not researching past chivalry). Cracker could play the game to this objective, and other players could also play to it. Those people that beat him get the medallion. The player who fails most miserably would qualify for the "Eddy the Eagle" specatacular disaster award. Of course some elite players might choose not to take the challenge, in which case they might qualify for the "Golden Chicken" award for the highest ranking player too chicken to take the challenge. Cracker might even win the Eddy the eagle award, in which case as a forfeit he would have to change his avatar to a Ski jumper for a month. How sweet would that be?

Daft Bleeder award. Start 5 tiles from the top of the map, explore north pop a hut for a settler, found a town with 3 cattle, gems, spices, river and coast in the radius. How do people do that? Such clairvoyance has only been previously demonstated by the Dark Lord (Vader) himself and deserves special recognition.

Billy No Mates award. The PTW game with the highest play time. (There is a theoretical maximum for this).

Sorry Darling award. The PTW game with the lowest (Quickest) play time. (Think about it).

Sweaty Sock award. For the cheesiest QSC timeline.

Prima Donna award. Actually I think this is a good idea (seriously). Rename it the Players player of the month award for instance and it might work. Cracker nominates half a dozen games, that show great achievement. Not just games like Zwinglis last month (great as it was) but also games from lesser mortals that have shown achievement. Everybody votes for their favourite. Nice. Maybe the posts relevent to that game could be condensed into a single web page, and be used as an educational tool. Just thinking out loud.

Mortar board award. For any player that develops a new idea that advances the CIV knowledge base.

Vote for your favourite, or alternatively don't. Even better, add your own

The serious side to this is that I have been thinking about how to make GOTM more accessible. One of the difficulties I see is that novice players don't want to play a game they can't win when the difficulty is too high, wheras the elite players are not challenged by easier level games. I hope that maybe someone on the forum might have an idea that sparks something in cracker and his team that enable them to widen the appeal of GOTM even further.

EDIT: I made a mistake with the POLL. PLEASE do not take into consideration the amount of work involved in administrating these awards. It will colour the result. When the Poll closes it will become clear why ;)

 The first two look like too much work, but I *love* the daft bleeder thing. Sweaty Sock is cool, too. :)

Renata

How about the:

Wide Ranger: the opposite of the I crammus maximus award

Lost Forrester: the lost game with the highest number of cities

Gardenshed Rocketeer: the lost game with the highest number of spaceship parts

BTW I didn't choose any of the options in the poll because I like the ones in your post that were'nt mentioned in the poll :(. I agree with Renata that the first two seem an extra burden on our busy GOTM staff.

I like the Prima Donna award the best, though I would call it the "People's Choice" award. I think nominations from anybody would be okay. The timetable for voting may be tricky because by the time the results are out, many people are focusing on the current game.

Possible nominees would be for first time participants, someone moving up a level or two for the first time, someone with an unorthodox strategy (like Zwingli's April game), games with a good write up and storyline (like many of Zachariel's).

Along those lines, how about a Most Improved Player, and a Rookie of the Month award. This gives the newer players something to aim for as the top awards are usually beyond reach. The staff already tracks the number of games participated in, so these would not be much more work.
+ Bill

Agreed, 1st 2 options would be far too much to expect of Cracker and the team; they already do crazy amounts of work just to make GOTM as good as it is now (and their efforts I respect hugely)

South Park Kenny Award for player with fewest/zero Great Leaders (would be a tie most months though).

The Genghis Khan Naval Award for player with most naval losses to fog and barbs. It might have been Kublai though...

The Peacenik Medal for players who never went to war in a game. Just to prove they COULD win that way. It might give the advanced players something to aim for.

The Andrei Sakharov Cup for the player with the most "Dissident" strategy. A difficult one to place, perhaps.

The 5 Year Plan Badge for the player who finishes (win or lose) with the most units.

The Exxon Valdez Shield for the player who finishes the game with the worst pollution level.

I think most of these are silly. But you asked...

Great idea!
I think that if there were more award people more people would play. It can discouraging to play and play and win nothing.

  • Polish Roulette "It's like Russian Roulette, but played with an automatic" {Multiple Winners} [Basically just another name for the Shoot Oneself in the foot.]
  • Prettiest Layout
  • Nicest {Multiple Winners} Given to people who have lots of Gracious AIs
  • Sorry Dude (or Sorry Dudette) "People with the worst RPG spins"
  • Most Improved
  • Most Consistent
  • Most (whatever the opposite of Improved is) People who really went downhill over previous games.
  • Most ingenious city names
  • Best QSC timeline.
  • Most Flowery Timeline.
  • Most helpful to newbies Timeline

Grrr, computer crashed while I was typing my last post... but that leads me into my idea for the "prima donna" award. The award should go to the most melodramatic player, the person who whines the most, because you call your friend a prima donna when he's being like that. You know, like 50 elite victories and no leader?! 6 turns of anarchy?!! And I was just one turn away from settling those spices/finishing the Pyramids/making contact with the Aztecs when my galley sank/finishing walls when they invaded!!!!! You get the idea. There has to be the right amount of righteous indignation in it too, like "how dare the computer do something like that to a player of my caliber!" I think I might deserve the prize.

Voted Medallian Man

There are definitely people on the high end who could use some extra challenge. I was proposing a 1 tile island in the middle of an ocean.
;)

How about this: Those milkers should have a 'creative farming' award for making interesting patterns - crop circles, Civil War scenes, paving the world w/MA, etc.

Awards for spectacular crashes, most pollution, etc. would be funny, as long as nobody gets too offended.

How about the "Black Helicopter" award for the silliest UN-vote losses (and no, I didn't come up with this by accident ;) ) ?

I like the idea of extra awards.

I think the "official" ones are more or less set by the game mechanics, and so are the "Phillibusters" (a stroke of genius, if I can say it), but there is room for unnumbered more. And I agree that more awards would contribute to encouraging us lower-level players...

Only, I suggest that we do consider the amount of work required to track the additional awards... ;)

EDIT: Jack, what exactly did you mean with "silly UN-vote loss"? I'm curious! :)

Sirp: Very perceptive. How about the other four polled options?
Please don't post the answer if you work it out.

I made a mistake with the polling options in that I did not consider that people would worry about how difficult they were to implement, and so the descriptions imply differing workloads for the staff. I wanted people to vote (or not) without thinking about it at all.

For those people concerned about new awards generating work for staff, I would like to alay those concerns. The point of the poll is not to get any of the options listed included in the GOTM structure. All five options do a very specific thing, and are presented in a silly and frivolous way on purpose. Really I was just trying to generate a discussion about making the GOTM more accessible.

When the poll closes next Wednesday I'll post the twist. Don't lose any sleep over it as it is only slightly less silly and frivolous than the original poll. However it is important that when people click on this thread they exercise the option they really want without regard to how it affects anyone else.

If I say any more it will ruin the poll.

By the way... how is the Pantheon of Heroes doing? ;)

He's fine, really... ;)

Ok. I had drafted a few tables, and we did some talking about them.
I need to add a few corrections, which is the reason of the delay.
After this, at least the medals + awards part should be ready for Cracker's publishing skills (mine are close to nil...).

Wait a minute, I got it!

You declared war on everybody else, then on the next turn you called the vote... :D

That would be great way to get that medal....;)

I vote for the golden chicken. :D I really think it would add to the forum if there were a variety of asinine awards that carried a penalty of a different forum avatar – so long as it was done in good faith, naturally.

Also, I should add that every time I build the UN I get the urge to call a vote just to see what the situation is, regardless of the fact that I’ve just declared nuclear war... Now that I can no longer reload in games to play about with silly things like this I really ought to learn a little more about personal restraint! ;)

What if I reword the poll as follows........?

What single action could be taken to improve the game of the month for you personally?

A) Do something to help people who can't play a full game in one month.

B) Do something to make the game more challenging for the Elite players.

C) Do more to stop people cheating.

D) Leave it alone. It's great as it is.

There were over 300 views of this thread, and less than 20 people voted. I would take that as an indication that most people are happy enough already.

I was surprised about the winning option though. Personally I couldn't give a stuff if people cheat, it won't affect where I end up.

I voted for the Alice in Wonderland option, purely selfishly as I will find it difficult to complete future GOTM games :(

I have been out of touch for a while so I am catching up with threads in this forum

This comes under my 'brief' on the GOTM Staff. Suggestions will always be welcome. I recognise that "elite" medals are only part of the GOTM story each month (hence me founding the "Philibuster" lowest score awards).

A current idea being considered that has also been raised in other threads is:
The most improved - With the introduction of the Jason scoring system the whole issue of comparing game difficulties, map sizes, etc has been taken care of. We now have the ability to offer an award for the largest score increase from the previous GOTM, the previous highest Jason score recorded for a player, or.....
