Just got civ3 so, if someone has asked this before...

anyway, I seem to have over population start almost at the beginning of the game. even if I have temple, then people get unhappy,

is there any way to stop this over population problem, or just keep people happy?

well, ive always built temples and cathedrals.....they are the first things to be built in my cities.....

i also make sure i get the "happy" wonders.....theres nothing worse than wasting civvies on entertainers.

i am happily supporting size 15 cities in my current game....depending on distance from palace of course.

Yeah, the above and trade for luxuries!!! People love those things. Try to trade for all of them it is well worth it. Add marketplaces too.

Under despotism 2 units can be used as military police. They each keep one worker content that would normally be unhappy.

Under despotism use that overpopulation to rush improvements
and military units. Rush important improvements like temples, granaries, barracks even cathedrals then change to higher
governent systems.

This cannot be emphasized enough. Since a Marketplace in a city dramatically increases the effect of luxuries, your happiness problems can be almost entirely solved by luxuries alone.

If you have access to all 8 luxury resources, you'll have 1+1+2+2+3+3+4+4 = 20 happy faces from luxuries. If you can't make your cities happy when you're getting that much of a bonus, you're doing something very wrong.

I'll agree with Sarcastro... luxuries are the most effective tool in combatting unrest. I'll found cities in Jungle if there's 2 or more dyes nearby. I spend nothing on Entertainment tax-wise, and have no entertainers in my cities, and I'm currently supporting a ton of size 15-20 cities. This is on Warlord.

Speaking of... I wish more people would specify which difficulty level they're playing.
