Oxford University

But Oxford University doesn't sit outside Oxford!

This is true. In fact, A realistic portrayal would show the University taking over the town. Every other 'block' would be a college, library or other university building, and some sort of defensive bonus would be provided from units being able to ferry themselves around in the underground library archives.

Speaking of which, I'm glad to see that the zoomed in city centres now look a bit more realistic in cIV. I always hated the way that, in Civ3, your largest city would consist of a tower block, half a dozen small buildings and a bunch of isolated improvements, with long empty streets connecting them.

Cambridge / Oxford
Nobel Prize Winners: 81 / 47
Boat Races won: 78 / 72
Varsity Games won: 18 / 8
Rugby Varsity Matches won: 57 / 52
World University Rankings - Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2005): 2nd / 10th
- Times Higher Education Supplement (2005): 3rd / 4th

So which university should be in Civ4? Hard question, given this data!

This thread has reminded me of Blackadder IV.

Blackadder is explaining to General Melchett how he caught a German spy.

Blackadder: (To Nurse Fletcher-Brown) Do you remember you mentioned the clever boyfriend?

Nurse: Yes?

Blackadder: I then leaped on the opportunity to test you. I asked if he'd been to one of the great universities, Oxford, Cambridge or Hull.

Nurse: Yes, Well?

Blackadder: You failed to spot only TWO of those are great universities.

General Melchett: Thats right! Oxfords a complete dump!!!

Ah, but Melchett's inability to use apostrophes indicates pretty poor standards at Cambridge too!

Oxford has more reason to be in the game than Cambridge, partly because sporting events are totally irrelevant to everything, but mainly because in the later Middle Ages Oxford was far, far more important. This was where Duns Scotus, William Ockham, Roger Bacon, John Wycliffe, and any number of people worked. Who was there at Cambridge during this critical period, other than a bunch of enfeebled dons who thought Oxford townies were too rough...?

Since the "Oxford" wonder is a National one, perhaps they could make it Civ spcific. For instance, the "Oxford" for America would be Harvard. The University of Paris for the French. Or course, that gets sticky when you get to civs like the Aztec.

I agree with you. Sunshine Tafe hairdressing should have been there instead of Oxford University.

Who cares, It also would be Tartu University... I care about the bonus what it gives... And the boost into city where is the best commerce is a nice boost:)

I'd say the one ranked first, which is neither Cambridge nor Oxford.

I think it's not where the university is ranked, more how famous it is. I would bet that more people around the world have heard of Oxford university than any other.

Maybe - but can you show me 18 of them in the world ? ( like in Civ 4 ? ) :p ;)

OMFG they put Eiffel Tower and not Blackpool Tower!!!111!!!LOLZOR!!!11

Seriously folks, does it really matter? Oxford, from what I've gauged by speaking to foreigners, is more prestigious and famous than Cambridge. I'm not going to say which is better as I'm at Leeds, as we all know we piss on you ;) hehe

If Firaxis had put "Harvard University" or "Yale University" people would complain it isn't Oxford... :P

I don't think it makes a great deal of difference

That is simply my favorite episode! :)

Mary: So you're going to be around for quite a while, then.

Edmund: Looks like it.

Mary: Good, because, er, it can get pretty lonely round here, you know.
God, it's nice to have someone healthy to talk to. (offers) Cigarette?

Edmund: No, thank you. I only smoke cigarettes after making love. So, back in
England, I'm a twenty-a-day man.

Mary: (blows smoke in Edmund's face) A man should smoke. It acts as an
expectorant and gives his voice a deep, gravely, masculine tone.

Edmund: God, I love nurses; they're so digustingly clinical!
