Pact of Nilhorn

Lots of wonders are less useful when built late - I don't see why this should be "souped up" when it's already pretty powerful if built early.

I have been playing long and complicated games of this mod...and I have an anouncement to how I feel about the changes made since this thread began to this particular Wonder "Crown Achievement"..The Stooges and all this Wonder is one I have often failed to make in time yet this Last two games I have achieved it and feel a joy at this Wonder. Great Job!!!:king: :D :band: :trophy: :gp: :culture: :food: :food: :gold: :health:   :D Well you get the picture. Thanx!

Very amusing incident with Larry, Curly, & Moe this morning. I didn't build the Pact, and it wasn't until late, when my good friend declared war on me (His better friend started it), that I saw them.
But I didn't recognize them at first. See, when the Luchurip's Larry, Curly, & Moe came at me, they were ravenous Werewolves! I guess Berri built the Baron and converted all the stooges.

How is that possible? I have made a vampiric Baron in one game, but never a werewolf giant :)

I'm not sure, I guess units keep their unique names after conversion? It was really weird, at any rate.

Ok..I would like to try this but please tell me how it changes their apperrance and.......Are they statistically the same?....I have never done this feet but I do Like Larry,Curry and Moe allot and they do have more kills than anyone except my Tiger Army

That's really funny! Too bad though- technically they should be GIANT ravenous werewolves. Unless giants are immune to lycanthropy?

Back on topic- PoN is definitely one of the best wonders available, one I make a priority once I have a stable defense built up for my cities. In my current game the stooges all have over 200 exp and are kicking butt! One of them almost died to a heavy crossbowman, and certainly would have to the follow up attacks if I didn't have the 3 of them together...

They would have been better as giants. They were just plain rav. werewolves, but had the stooge names.
I will check it out when next possible yet the sadness of this possiblity is beyond me Larry is at 122+ now with Curly and Moe at about Half that Mostly because Jonas hasn't stopped attacking them yet......The stooges stay on Heal alot right now.

..Kaazak Made the Pact... the typical Dwarves with a flavor of Iriony and not to mention a reverence in dwarven circles...and a possible diffent approach to the Giant/Dwarf fued.. From a Hidden possition a dwarf and his companions yell at a Giant "Recognize the Pact of be slain." The non-responsive angry Giant is obviously rogue and attacks. "Poor Giant bastard" a dwarf in the company says calmly "Sure am glad Larry,Curly and Moe have more sense than this surley sot, cuz against these Axes and our advantageous possition he doesn't stand a chance.":mischief:

Hi guys,

I have built the pact of the nilhorn several times but every time I miss the 3 giants. Do I need a special tech for the giants?

How about a timer attached to the PoN which will respawn one HG each ten turns or something after you lost the first. (So, if you lose all three in one go it'd take thirty turns for all three to respawn in the city with PoN).

To make them useful in the later stages of the game, how about offering upgrades to them (maybe one in mid-game and one in the late-game, working kinda like the War Elephant upgrade) which cost a hefty sum of gold, but really make the HG powerful again.

As for other HGs in the world, "attacking" them could (for the PoN owning player) result in the HG simply disbanding without a fight. No XP might be gained, but a little messagebox could inform of a present of 12gp or tales from afar (like the map from huts) or something else of very moderate power.

Maybe, if at that time one of the original trio was dead, the HG would outright join you, but that's really optional as it would be a very rare case nonetheless.

Edit: A respawning HG would lose all his promotions, I really think of it as a "replacement" rather than a actual respawn/resurrection.

Edit2: Lol, I actually failed to check the post dates before writing the reply. I guess no changes will be made at this point... My apologies.

WOW was this a monster necro - from 2006? Seriously? I applaud you! That took some major digging, friend.

You shouldn't need a tech for the giants, no. Possible bug?

The Pact is strong enough without making the Hill Giants even better. IMHO, the Pact is a cost-benefit thing. You get these really strong units early in the game, BUT they're useless in the endgame and you have to give up a bunch of hammers to get them. I like it as-is.

hahahaha, I was surprised to see this thread appear again too!

The Pact of the Nilhorn is a beeline for me and I can usually get it as I find the AI is slow to build it - at Monarch difficulty anyway. I just love getting them strong against the barbs and then sending them as HN units into AI civ territory to pillage and remove defenders from cities. The AI takes time to get any units that can contest them and by then you can normally have those Stooges with plenty of promotions that will make them stand up to T3 units. They don't do well against heroes and T4 units, however.

I agree that they lose their effectiveness somewhat when T4 units populate the map, but I would not call them useless. You can always use them for their bombard skills (I think they throw coconut custard pies!) and, if you kept them as HN they can still harrass 'friendly' troops that are not too strong.

Aside from the tech that allows you to build the Pact, no. As soon as it's done, three Hill Giants (aka the Stooges, Curly, Larry, and Moe) should spawn in your city. Which Patch are you on?
