NEW YORK - Television's most popular program, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," is also its least family-friendly, a TV watchdog group said Thursday.

The Parents Television Council criticized the CBS drama for stories about cannibalism, S&M sex clubs and snuff films.

What's worse is that CBS occasionally reruns the show at the 8 p.m. hour when more children are likely to be watching, said Melissa Caldwell, research director for the 800,000-member organization that monitors sex and violence on TV. The group released its annual list of the best and worst prime-time shows.

The Thursday night drama usually tops the Nielsen Media Research weekly prime-time ratings and has already been responsible for one spinoff series, "CSI: Miami."

As forensics investigators, the lead "CSI" characters might be expected to bear witness to some seedy situations. But Caldwell said, "There are ways you can deal with these issues without having to be as graphic."

CBS spokesman Chris Ender said that while the PTC's goals are noble, "to put the label worst in front of `CSI' in any capacity is pretty ridiculous. Thankfully, 26 million viewers a week don't agree."

The organization saluted CBS' "Touched By an Angel," which ended its nine-year run last spring, as television's best show.

"Every episode emphasized the power of goodness over evil, the need to strengthen familial relationships, the importance of individual responsibility and an encouragement to maintain faith in God," the PTC said.

The organization's 10 best shows: "Touched By an Angel," CBS; "Doc," Pax; "Sue Thomas F. B. Eye," Pax; "7th Heaven," WB; "Life with Bonnie," ABC; "Smallville," WB; "Reba," WB; "Star Search," CBS; "George Lopez," ABC and "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teen-age Daughter," ABC.

The PTC's 10 worst: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS; "Kingpin," NBC; "Fastlane," Fox; "NYPD Blue," ABC; "Fear Factor," NBC; "Angel," WB; "Girlfriends," UPN; "Will & Grace," NBC; "Friends," NBC and "Big Brother 3," CBS.

While I wouldn't be caught dead watching most of that "top ten list". The "bottom ten list" programs are a mixed bunch too. While CSI, Fear Factor, and some of the sitcoms are good, most of the other stuff sucks.

Sounds awfully familiar with the speech of the Jews for Jesus & Others...

There goes God all over again, intruding in ordinary people's lives...

And NYPD Blue is a classic !

All the 'good' stuff sucks... :hmm:

I for one, like CSI. I am one of the 26 million that watch it on a regular basis.

Their kids, who I might add are currently at this very moment being forced to watch Veggie Tales reruns.

Anyone seen the SNL spoof on Veggie Tales called Religtables....Hilarious  "Learn about the Spaish Inquisiton, the Crusades, Vanquishing the Caananites......"

As I remember, God created vegetables and Satan BigMac ;)

I like CSI, and it probably isn't for the tots or ones with little tolerance to graphic images. They have a right to hate it, and they have a right to not watch it or let their children watch it.

As forensics investigators, the lead "CSI" characters might be expected to bear witness to some seedy situations. But Caldwell said, "There are ways you can deal with these issues without having to be as graphic."

That is mostly BS imo. even if they didn't show as bad of images their are still episodes that deal with rape and murder and about everything else, so even if they toned down the "bad images" it's still a subject they probably wouldn't want their 7 year old to know about. So you keep your kid from watching it and let us keep the "graphic content"

I am horrified that "Touched by an angel" is considered to be appropriate material for children's viewing. It most definitely requires a mature audience.

The reason for this is that young children are unable to distinguish fact from fiction. They might easily start believing in fictional characters such as "God" or "angels"... it is not good for children to start imagining that when you get into trouble or, worse yet, do horrible evil things, all you need to do is repent and cry and an angel from this "God" will come and save your butt...

I don't watch the show but if parents groups say it's bad it must be worth watching.

You heathen! The lake of fire awaits thee for insulting the grace of Larry the Cucumber!

Huck Finn, don't try to turn this around. CSI is the evil show here. Don't try to tell these brainwashed fools how to raise their little fools. I mean children.

On one side, you have parents who raise their children in a religous way and it isn't so useful once the child gets out into the rreal world. On the other hand, you have worthless people raising worthless children by not being a PARENT to them. Joy and rapture.

Ok, the PTC doesn't like homosexuality ("Will & Grace", "Friends") and violence ("CSI", "Fastlane", etc.). Maybe the best idea is to just turn off the TV and send the kids to some catholic church ;)

It's a network for families run by religius fanatics.

I don't know how any show with Will and Marg in it can be regarded as anything other than bloody brilliant. :)
Of course it is not for kids. Responsible parents should not let their tots watch it. There is such a thing as an off switch.

Well i haven't watched CSI, must say that forensic science isn't exactly the basis for the most exciting of television (although it has to beat the "reality" tv shows). What I've seen of CSI didn't inspire me, and i figure it's just gonna be another of the Law and Order type shows where the good guys always win and the bad guys always slip up. Can't stand that rubbish anymore :)

As for the rest of the worst 10, haven't heard of Kingpin or Fastlane or Girlfriends. Love Angel and am a big fan :) , but the rest is all absolute rubbish :) Altho pretty much all the top 10 are as well.

Conclusion: There is nothing worth watching on TV :)
(As a side note, the few shows I watch on tv with any frequency are Inspector Rex (Austrian), the Simpsons, the Sopranos, Angel, Alias and Football :) and Pizza (Australian) if i get the chance - it's on at the same time as alias  there is so few shows worth watching on tv, and then they put two of them on at the same time.

Oh yeah and of the ones above, pretty much only Inspector Rex, the Sopranos and Angel are shows that I'd make an effort to watch.

Found this little tidbit online

Television - A medium
So called because it is neither rare nor well done.

I hardly ever watch tv anymore, and if I do its usually Simpsons, Futurama, or Family Guy. It just isn't interesting to me anymore.
