I'm sorry that I can't draw my own conclusions from previous posts in this forum and on the 1.52-thread, but they're too many and confusing.
My question is: Does patch 1.52 make the game better? Is it even essential? Or does it mess up the game / don't work? (since people are asking for a new patch)

Another question - can I continue a game I'm running now, after I've installed the patch?

I depends on your gamestyle. Look at the chenges they made. Do they benefit you? Personally I like the patch.

read fs-1 in SG's and see the horror that was 1.09 late game.

not to mention this fun picture...

1.09 was garbage, 1.52 cleaned it up completely.

and yes you can patch and still play old saves, the only thing is late game saves will have the date pushed back as 1.52 extended the end game.

Cheers!

The patch made me rethink how to play when going for a point victory. No last minute wins by taking 2 or three cities at the end to get a quick point victory. With the patch you can no longer do this. It takes time for the cities you captured to add to your score.

Winning with points has become more of a challenge.

ok... but I guess I can't patch in the middle of a game, right? I mean, are the "old" save files compatible with the patched civIV?

I bought the game when 1.09 was already out. Could only play till 18th century (huge map) with it. I installed Harkonnen patch, and could play the game till the end. Then 1.52 came, I reinstalled civ4 and installed the patch, and could play till early 16th century. So it actually went for worse.

I went back to 1.09 with Harkonnen patch and can play the game. So if you have similar problems do as I did.

Depending on your system, 1.52 is a golden child, in my book. I installed it from the get go, and haven't had half the problems I have heard of.

I'd say do it now. The next patch is due out sometime soon, if you believe the rumor mill. :) I would, definitely think about, that is for sure.

One reason, all the mods that are being developed now run with 1.52, not 1.09. ;)

1.52 for me was a godsend. Without it my graphics had to run bare minimum to get any kind of speed. Now they run on maximum.

Before the 1.52 patch, my games bogged down over time and eventually crashed.

No problems playing with the patch. Also, in my opinion, all of the gameplay changes were for the better.

Patch made the game smoother for me (esp on the huge maps) and I prefer the rule changes as well. I would strongly recommend installing. If you have problems you can always remove the program and reinstall.
