i agree memory leak a major problem play for more than an hour and game moves like molasses

They said the patch would be out sometime this week. No word on when "sometime" is. You know how devlopers are with software. "It will be out when it's done".

The recommended specs say 512MB RAM. I have 1 GB RAM. So Why is Civ4 using over a GB of page file!?!?!?

Memory Leak! Fix it!!!:mischief:

Hello,
In solo mode, I have these memory problems (512Mo RAM) that always comes with diplomacy when a computer wants to talk me. It can block 5 or 10 mintues (the hard disk working hard) and then the game is unblock and see the computer opponent.
I am a programmer and i was just wonderding if this trouble does not come from python engine (that could run its garbage collector) and the memory leaks caused by objects used in C++ and python.

for people who have 1GB RAM, do you have freeze trouble ? if no, i'll buy some RAM, but if it is not caused by that... :crazyeye:
EDIT: ok didn't see the previous post :-)

I get freezes sometimes when the AI wants to talk to me as well, but more like 5-10 seconds.
P4 3.0Ghz
1GB RAM, etc, etc...

After lots of time surfing the forums here I have fixed most of my big problems, specifically the rediculously low frame rates... the game seems to have stopped CTD, so I'm happy about that!

However, I REALLY want the patch to make the game not fragment the crap out of my C: drive!! Every time I run the game and I analyze my C: drive after closing it (after a couple of hours of game time) the C: drive is over 35% fragmented!! No other game I have on my PC does this to my hard drive and this fragmentation crap only occurs after running CIV.

Also, the game came REALLY close to crashing my entire PC last nite. It was running fine for hours, then, as I was scrolling around the map, the game just FROZE... the music was still playing, but my hard-drive was going full tilt and I couldn't do much of anything for about 10 minutes. I managed to ALT-TAB out the game to see the memory usage and it was almost maxxed out at 480MB (my PC only has 512MB of RAM, so this was big for me). After I regained control of the game (it kinda just unfroze for no reason) I promptly saved my game and exited.

Where is this patch?? I shouldn't have to choose between the integrity of my primary hard drive and fulfilling my CIV addiction... cuz CIV always wins out!

MY PC stats:
AMD Athlon 2.16Ghz, overclocked to 2.7Ghz
512MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX5600 w/ 81.85 forceware drivers

They could say 512Mo minimum and 1GB advise...

I hope they will correct these probably difficult bugs, because this time is not acceptable in a user interface.

Thanks WetWarev7, i will buy some memory for that because this is a good game and i would like to play without being angry :)

The patch will be done when it's done. If Civ 4 won't run on your computer and you consider that to be your biggest problem right now, then consider yourself lucky that you don't have real problems to worry about.

Uty this is a tech support thread. People want to know when the support is coming as do I. I do not want to be told where my problems fit in relation to the rest of our civilization.

While this thread is in the tech support forum, it isn't a tech support thread when it is nothing more than a bunch of people saying "Where is the patch and whining about the problems. Since there are alread a few dozen threads that are asking where the patch is, you can post in one of those.

Tech Support is for getting help with your problems, not continuously posting about the same thing.

i don't see anything wrong in people complaining that the product they bought doesn't satisfy. releasing a game that has major compatibility issues is plain wrong. i'm not saying somebody should be punished now or anything, but this is happening more often from year to year and something should be done about it. i can understand when it comes to small companies and enthusiasts with low budget, but this just isn't the case. it is now normal to buy a game and wait for a patch, but that's plain cheating. i presume that testing can be somewhat expensive and time consuming, but when you're faced with a 'failed to initialize renderer' kind of problem on ATI cards (about 50% of gamers have these) it makes you wonder. i

Uty,

Give me a break, man. Seriously.

I'm sure plenty of people here have "real" problems. This forum is dedicated to technical problems with Civ IV as Canuck Bill stated (well said Bill).

Ranos,

Give me a break, man. Seriously.

You ever heard the term " squeakiest wheel gets the grease?" The problems here are not your run-of-the mill bugs. They are borderline astronomical. The publisher AND the devs need an earful of squeaks and we need some grease gosh darnit.

I would be more diplomatic if these were bugs that may have slipped through the QA cracks, but c'mon! The game is practically unplayable for many, many people.

It's possible to state you've got technical problems without blowing it out of proportion. I have a problem with the lack of documentation in the programming side of things, but I don't make it out to be like that's on par with having my leg amputated or going hungry.

For the record:

Right - "I just bought the game and <error description ensues> Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know how to fix it?"

Wrong - "I just bought the game and it doesn't work! I have waited so long for this game and it's buggy and it's crap and it sucks! Why can't I play?  "

I aint posted anything here in tech support before, I have had the same problems as other people here and I understand why people who are unswervingly loyal to a franchise that as had a great past can be so annoyed with what seems to be a rushed out game.

What I don’t understand are the people who get angry at the people complaining? They have a right to complain about a bad service. I rushed out the day civ was released and got it, I had to wait another week cause im in Ireland, I expect to get a game, install it and play. I don’t wanna wait for patches or updates.

If anyone else remembers another great franchise was master of Orion, look what happened to that when it was released with a lot of bugs?

They already released one piece of incomplete software. Ironic if they tried to say "when it's done" now.

No kdding...

I have an Athlon 3200+, 1 gig of PC400 SD RAM and a 128 Meg Ge Force FX 5600 and this game runs TERRIBLE even at low video settings.

You can just shut the *bleep* up. Obviously this Tech Support isn't for helping with anything. I haven't anything to help with my problem and I have posted all my stuff. I have over recommended. So yeah, I wanna know when the *bleeping* patch is coming out. I have hundreds of problems, Civ 4 is just one that shouldn't be a problem. I should be able to play this game and escape from my others for a bit. I should be able to play with my girlfriend, I bought it for her as a gift, but I can't play because of extreme lag and on multiplayer it seems I get white terrian and black water (WTH?). So yea I'm gonna complain. I'm gonna complain until I get what I want. What else is there to do? I have no reason not to. I'm pissed and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I want to play my game. I want to enjoy my 50 dollars. If you're game works and you never had any problems, then I doubt you have any help so just move on out of here and go play the game. Don't sit here in the tech support and tell people to stop whining and complaining unless you have a sure-fire solution for our problems. Otherwise GTFO.
