Patches not Installing Properly - stopping BtS from Installing

I've installed Civ4 before without problems, but this time there seems to be no end of useless error messages (all of which are related to these recent 'patches' Firaxis has made, although when they cause so many problems like this I find it hard to call them patches...)

Here's a timeline of how I tried installing this stuff:
1. Installed Civ4 vanilla properly.
2. Attempted to install Beyond the Sword. Everything ran smoothely until it autopmatically searched out the latest patch and gave me an error message saying that the patch couldn't be installed and exited (I even tried turning off my router but it still magically found this new patch...)
3. After a bit of searching I was told that installing the latest Civ4 vanilla patch was needed for the latest BtS patch, so off I went to do that...
4. The latest vanilla patch gave me an error message saying it was incompatable with my current vanilla patch (even though I never installed one) and failed to install.

Now my question is: why is all of this stuff incompatible with each other and how do I fix it?

I just had this problem. Install the patch before the last patch (I think 1.61), then the last one. Then install BTS.

ok that worked, but firaxis should kill whoevers responcible for thinking "hey lets make our newest patches incompatable with the game!"
