Today, June 16th, 2012, I ended Steam.exe in Windows Task Manager (Go to Run and type in taskmgr.exe and hit enter) under Processes. Then I tried Steam again and it worked perfectly. Also it verified with no errors.
----------------------------
I tried verifying the game cache, but that didn't work at all. It just gave me more seconds before crapping out. So I verified it again. This time "1 files" instead of "34 files" had problems. Did. Not. Work. This time is the third! I got: the same file was broken. The only file responsible for my pain and misery refuses to fix itself. Why, now, on the day I planned for making this mod work. I feel like quitting, and just uploading my mod to mediafire and hoping that no one steals it and has the kind heart to test it out and tell me if the textures worked. But I really don't want the first mod I ever made for anything to be stolen, so I'll see if I can find more solutions or wait it out. I still encourage fellow Civ fans to double-verify the integrity of your caches if you have problems UNRELATED TO PREVIOUS SAVE FILES. This is a common error with this mod, it's a hard pill to swallow, but it could be worse. You could be the poor saps who have crashes at startup. Which is not supported well by 2K unless you DXDiag for them.

Now it says all files have been verified. It still crashed.

Please read the entire thread before troubleshooting me. I put a special bold section for anyone trying to help me fix this incase it somehow relates to me.

I think its very obvious it broke the save game and crashes often.

But I have a bigger issue for modders.

Me:

Gee, I can't wait to finally try this new Civ! I hope I got the textures right!

As soon as I hit the MODS button on the Main Menu, the music stuttered and as far as I can tell the game performed an action that crashed it seconds later.

Why do I think it was on purpose, or related to 'MODS'? This patch added Steam Workshop support. The same window that let me test my new mod also housed the Mod Browser service, which may have been taken down or altered to work with Steam better.

Also, I could still select my mod and hit the button to load it by the time it 'stops working'. If it was a real crash it would have most likely immediately halted or screwed up. This one gave me a few seconds after the music skipped before everything died. The exact amount of time most actions have delay for me during a standard game.

I'm not saying its on purpose, or that its not just me. I'm saying MODS may be broken right now, and we as a community need to test this, rather then make several threads about the same issues.

That's my biased report on mods being broken for me. Now for bold because I'm feeling irate and I hate stupid questions.

The mod in question, Larry Page of YouTube, has not been uploaded to the Mod Browser OR Steam Workshop. It was still in testing, it still is, and was built and rebuilt in the latest Mod Buddy IDE, the one made after the patch. It was the only mod in my data, all the others were destroyed after the patch because I didn't use them. But I did keep Queen of Iceni for reference in a SEPERATE folder.

tl;dr: I said read the entire post, that paragraph in eye-hurting bold text is the most important.

This means that the only mod there was made for Civ V, on the latest patch, and was the only mod there. This is not my fault.

Ask and ye shall receive more details.

Finding answers to mods, may work better in the mod forums. They did release the "patch" to the mods so they would be ready. That does not gaurantee that they will be ready by the time the patch "hits" for everyone else.

It is the normal rule though, that modding usually has to "catch" up after a patch.

It seems that this patch was a major one, and has caused a lot of headaches. I assume they are trying to get a smooth transition for Gods & Kings, by getting major patches out earlier.

History has a way of repeating itself also. This is coming from someone who does not even go into the modding forums.

I appreciate your reply, sir. But this is not a mod-related issue. I was unclear. The MODS I spoke of, was the MODS button on the menu. When it clicks, no matter the contents of the folder that contains the mods in My Games, MODS, it will crash.

I did try it with no mods. Still crashed, only now its crashing a little faster. I couldn't even click anything before it crashed now. However, I tried to validate my cache, and Steam said:

"Well, looky here! 270MB of data seemed to be mangled beyond repair! Let's take care of that. We're already downloading for ya."

Say what you will, but when Gaben collaborates, everyone is happy. Now I just need to see if that fixed it so I can get the word out. I've had previous issues with Civ V, like no Leader/Civ parts of the DLC loading at all and that required a full reinstall.

So it's crashing when clicking the "MODS" button, before you even get the the legal accept screen?

I'll explain in depth, because yes, you're right, that's kinda off, Sir.

I press Continue after the beautiful Loading Screen I might add, I don't like seeing the intro every time I start the game and that screen was a nice touch.

I press MODS.

Afterwards, I press Accept.

Then for a second, the music stops and the game freezes. I am allowed to resume normal play for around 2 seconds. Then it goes black and everything comes tumbling down. I verified my game cache as many times as it took to say 100% verified successfully, and still it happened. I've tried with and without mods installed.

I'll try it! ...No dice. I wonder if buying Gods & Kings will fix it, since the patch was intended for that. My mom surprised me with a 25 dollar GameStop card for buying it so if I can muster 2 more dollars from a parent with a credit card I could buy it and download it.

Could you try moving or deleting your cache (in your My Documents/My Games/Civ V/ folder), and remove all mods from the mod folder, then start up?

Thanks, and let me know. If that got corrupted, this could happen.

No problem, I'm on it, I'll edit when I'm done. Also I just got Gods and Kings, but I'm not gonna bother with that until after this.

Crashed like a brick in a windshield. Should I try verifying the integrity of the game cache now that I moved it?

It DID say NO MODS INSTALLED however, and gave me about 2 seconds before it crashed.

There's something going on with the connection to steam workshop that is causing issues for you. Do you have any problems (while in-game) clicking "shift-tab" and navigating to the workshop?

It constantly closes itself because it can't handle a page as powerful as a wikia page for long periods of time, but I was able to subscribe to an mod. However, it never installed itself. Afterwards, I decided to see if it did install that time. Another crash, straight to the ol' black screen then desktop.

It won't install until you get to the Mods browser. That page initiates the subscribed downloads. I'm going to point Shaun (modding engineer) to this thread and see what ideas he may have.

Your particular problem is very specific (I haven't seen this anywhere else). We had one other person who had this issue, but it cleared up once Workshop calmed down the first day.

I had a feeling. Only one person complained about this on the 2K Boards for Civ V and no one responded to him or her. And considering I got the game from GameStop PC Downloads I don't think they'll let me have the cd key until the official release on the 19th.

We'll get it figured out. Can you tell me if your lua.log file has anything in it (My Docs/My Games/Civ V/Logs/)?

Buuut I did find two logs that were modified in the same minute that talk about failures. I tried reverifying and the same 5.0MB file was corrupted and invalid. Again.

XML.LOG ahoy

On an unrelated note, and to shamelessly make it so you don't have to double post, I really enjoyed this game. The unit stacking bothered me sure, but this is all in all the best Civ game I've tried. And for once I was finally able to rush production with gold. I had no idea it was even possible because I had a hard time navigating the ironically very similar menu in Civ IV, the first game I played. I don't regret it. Christopher Tin's work sold it for me as well as sheer laughter at the fact that I might possibly be nuked by bathed in a cancerous brown by Ghandi of all people. This game helped me make the choice to take AP World History. Now I actually know what Ashika did! I was curious. So kudos to Mr. Seckman and you too Mr. Shirk, and the whole Civ V team at Firaxis games for your amazing work and quick and create response to issues you found in your game. One of the first devs I've seen that actually patrols forums to see user problems.

There, see mods, I mentioned the tech support I was given so its sorta relevant.

EDIT: I restarted Steam and it appeared to work. Now to test it with my new mod! The only thing I did differently was a different day, I cut Steam.exe, restarted steam, and re-verified the cache. 100% non corrupted. It works! So maybe the common solution was restarting Steam!

I was able to test my mod again, and the textures are all still broken and I'm getting the TXT_KEY bug. Back to the drawing board. Thanks a lot, Mr. Shirk.
