specifically, space race victory. It is possible to consitantly win space race victories on monarch and above, without ever going to war? Or do you need to conqur your opponents in order to keep up with the resource advantage?

lets say standard settings pangea map with a bunch of players.

i tried doing relativly peacefull game on monarch, i took over the guy next to me early to give myself an edge in hopes i could hold out for the rest of the game but still i would slowly fall further and further behind in tech. Then again im not a highly skilled player.

Yes.

On BTS deity, it should be doable to win space without some conquer, but conquering a neighbour certainly settles in stone (or better instead of certainty if a particularly a bad map) the odds of winning.
In Warlords deity, conquering was almost a must; the AI was developping too fast. And there were less means to catch up.

This could be the problem. ;)
If I read game reports here of people winning high level OCC games while hardly ever building troops  - this makes me fell quite humble and shows for me there is still a lot to learn about the game. But isn't that the charme of it? To know it's possible, you just need to play good enough?

Anything can happen depending on map You're playing on. Smaller maps tend to have early conflicts while huge maps let You have some space to breathe for a while untill You engage in a war. I would say that it is easier to win conquest (even on higher difficulty) on a small pangea map while it can be quite a trick on a huge archipelago starting 1 Civ per island for example. You can win peacfully by culture for example but if Your isolated (in archipelago case) You will have a harder time herding religions for cathedrals etc. not to mention You won't have the early opportunity to steal a worker and so on. ;) In a nuthsell it is possible , everything is possible in Civ ;)

EDIT: space race on pangea with lots of civ's is highly unlikely but possible.

oh yea im talking about on warlords and vanilla. So how do you keep up with technology? Thats pretty much my main question. I had one game where i had about the same land as everybody else, and even with cottages everywhere i would check with the AI every now and then and they would always bet like 2-3 technologies ahead.

You are absolutely right ! The AI is always ahead of You ^^ Do You not think this as a challange ? ^^ It is great !!! , You can really develop Yourslef under such demanding circumstances ^^

I play Warlords at Immortal. I am far from expert player, but I absolutely cannot keep up with the tech leader on this level, especially with your requirement that it must be a peaceful game. If anybody here can do it, I tip my hat to him.

Spies. Adjust your spy ratio vs whatever civ has the tech lead and steal 'em blind.

A noble player ! ^^ I can ! not ! too ! It is a fool's quest ! Why we need to have all of those units ? If they want a peacefull resolution why marines !? Why laser targeting ? rocketry ? Rule over us it is the point now play against it and see how it plays out ? Is it the only way ? Or there is no way to peace ? Peace is the way ? See for Yourself ^^ ^.-

yea so thats not an option,
btw, going off topic here, i think the spy slider in :bts: is pretty dumb. It just makes the game more confusing and im no historian but i have never heard about any nation having a separate spy budget. I dont play :bts: so maybe im wrong but does anyone else agree with me that this was an unnesesary addition?

I would disagree. Spies have existed ever since some1 had something to hide - that would date so very early human settlements. Sliding that slider You got there just represents how much You're game ;) If You're not game some1 who is will take adventage of You and steal something or do something You're not feeling comfortable with - You choice :D Slide is slide. Unless You want to cheapen Yourself and play without it ;)

Spies are awesome, and even going back thousands of years, villages spied on each other. Besides, who ever heard of a civilization having a culture budget? It's a game. Espionage makes it much more fun.

Spys make it possible to war without siege (Well, you can with horses, but I like using spies for hilled cities with big culture). You can also steal monopoly techs and trade them around, really nerfing a civ that is doing well in research. Now, they can't trade and they have to self-tech everything.

As to peaceful, I can routinely win space races on emperor with just One City, so yes, it's very possible. Diplo is more important than your tech rate. Keep the world at war to slow them down. Keep the closest civ or two to you at friendly. And steal techs!

Even stealing one tech is more worth it than finishing that "internet" world project :mischief: :D

Most beaker expensive tech like metal casting :D

My apologies, should have read the entire sentance. The spy slider is base %, you can go into the spy options tab and adjust vs a specific civ.

I spy :D ... Childeren play ;)

Marry had a little lamb........
.......... :D ;) Do not ever underestimate espionage or You're in for

Mary had a little lamb
little lamb, and she was ....

spys can destory defences too? damned why isnt there anything in the history books about great sieges led by spies destoring the city walls?

It is very impossible because there were no explosives those days of catapults and battering rams. Spies could burn down granaries and libraries but not city walls.:mischief:
Then gunpowder make walls obsolete.

But think about the Trojan war, the tactics. ;)
