Peloponnesian War Scenario Development Thread

(By the way, by "hoping to post some tomorrow", I meant the Roman Cataphract! Still, I'll stay up all night and see if I can knock-up some Hoplite previews....I'll get some sleep at Christmas! :D )

As for 'alternative history' and the map.....as I said before, I too like what-if situations.
But the problem with Civ3 is; IF becomes WILL.
IF Etruria, Rome, Cyrene, etc are on the map, then they WILL, in just about every game, become involved.
(You know as well as I do what the AI is like! )

cool kryten, though I odnt want want to make you feel like you have to stay up to the units (well, except the cataphract, if its not done soo, if I ever come over there, you'll be lynched! ;) :P)

as for involvement- yeah I know, but the beauty of it is, those civs are likelly to become involved in there own region, like Rome and Etruia (or what little of that area is on that map) Syarcuse, Carthage, and the greek colonies, and then mainland Greece, and the foul persian pig-dogs ;)

Yes, exactly...So Xen...I am very eager to know...What territory is fleshed out?

I've been working on itallic, and Cyrenic, and Athenian territory a bit- ask me on monday, and i can give a better answer

Hmmm....Nice Ideas...I want a forge, but I can't seem to find one, besides an aztec forge...
I have three smithies in the "9 Medieval Buildings" link in my sig. Maybe you can use the one with the reed roof.

Very nice, mrtn...I'll see what C3C has, but otherwise, its what I'll probably use...:goodjob:

*twiddling thumbs waiting for unit from Kryten...

Xen, seeing as how it's just about Monday, how's the map goin'? Preview, maybe?

a preveiw would only bring up the geography- trust me, me monday after noon will be better- by then I might have a few nations territories completed instead of mixes of partially completed...I havent been woking linearlly...

U mean u deleted all my cities?!
Ah, well...If u did, u know territory better than I...

nope, but there are just way to many mis places, and not included, or relativelly bad choice cites (like marathon) that i had to sort through...

Terribly sorry Amenhotep7 for not having any new units to show you at the moment, but the Roman & Persian cataphract variations are taking me longer than I expected....and I did promise Xen that I would finish them first.
(busybusybusy.... :crazyeye: )

In the mean time, so that I don't create units that nobody wants, or have to keep changing/altering units (thus wasting time), I have composed a quick list of alternative Hoplite shields, emblems, and helmets. :)
You choose which ones you want (I can also add a cloak, or make other shield emblems or use other helmets if you wish):-

YOU_CHOOSE.gif

For the 'drafted' Hoplites for example, I am planning on using the basic Civ3 Spearman who is a bit 'skinnier', but with a plain bronze Hoplite shield and a cheap looking helmet (as their equipment was supplied by the state, it would not be of the highest quality).
Spartan "Armed Helots" = as above, but with the famous 'lambda' for Lacedaemonia on the shield.
Athenian "Ephiboi" = as above, but with say an owl (if I can make a convincing looking one)
Other "Conscripted Hoplites" = as above, but with just plain bronze shields.

(Historical note: only Sparta and Thebes had 'national symbols' on their shields during this period. All the other city states allowed their Hoplites to wear whatever thay liked on their shields, in order to make each individual soldier stand out in battle.....a bit like medieval chivalric symbols)

Typical Armies Of The Period
---------------------------

Hoplite heavy infantry armies with almost no cavalry:-
Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Argos, Thebes, and just about everybody in southern Greece, as well as the Greek colonies in southern Italy and Ionia.

Hoplite heavy infantry armies with more cavalry:-
Thessaly in central Greece, and the Etruscans, Romans, Campanians in Italy.

Peltast type armies with very few Hoplites and few cavalry:-
Illyria, Epirus, and Aetolia in western Greece.

Peltast type armies with no Hoplites but more cavalry:-
Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece, and the Samnites, Oscans, Lucanians, and Bruttians in Italy.

Mercenary armies, with a equal mixture of heavy infantry, Peltasts and cavalry:-
Syracuse and Carthage.

Persia would be, as they have always been, a huge mass of useless subjugated levy infantry with lots of average cavalry.
(But NO 'Immortals', as they were wiped-out 50 years earlier at Plataea ;) )

Most of the above would also have 'impressed/drafted/conscript' citizen infantry, as well as skirmishing light infantry with defensive bombardment (Archers in Greece and Asia Minor, Javelinmen in Italy, Sicily and North Africa).

:)

Thanks for the link Xen. :) A lovely site, just what I wanted.

Yes, choose the shield pattern you want from there, and I'll see if I can make it, or something like it at least. :D
(Just don't choose ALL of them! )

lot of good stuff, but it looks like the owl dissapered from the site (that site is where I got the idea from)

Okay, so it sounds like units are progressing pretty well...Kryten, ur ideas are great!:goodjob: The armies will be good once Xen is done with territory when I'll start placing units. Will we really need javelinmen, since we hae a peltast? Well, I suppose. What would Cyrene have, hm? Perhaps Libyan Mercenary? Or some other kind of Mercenary? I know, they'll need archers...

OT: Kryten, Do u just usae the cut and paste method using those shields and helmets on a hoplite body? If so, how do u use the cut and paste method? And where can I get a freeware/shareware program that enables me to use the cut and paste method?

Answers:- :)

* Yes, I just use 'cut-'n-paste' (so I am not a unit creator, but more of a unit adapter ;) )

* Have a look at this old thread about 'cutting-'n-pasting':-

* And a 30 day free trial of Paint Shop Pro can be found here:-

("Ah, a cunning plan Kryten. Teach Amenhotep to make his own, then you won't have to do them!" )

thats a good plan kryten :goodjob: though I hope you wont feel the need to postpone the cataphracts, and the Athenioan marine ;)

OT-on another note, how goes the alexander scenario? if you need help on that map, I'll be happy to help :) just as long as I have a premade list of all cities needed on th emap, and real maps on where there locations are ;)

Yeah, how is the scenario going?

Specifically, how are any Javelin throwing mounted units going? :p ;)

Okay, let's get back on topic...Kryten, I'd like to know how the ATG scen. is going, but put it as a side-note please. Xen...It is Monday afternoon! How goes the territory? Preview?
