Penalty for breaking an alliance?

Does anyone here know the penalty for breaking an alliance? In my current game, I have an alliance with Byzantine for 12 more turns against Sumeria. However, I wish to make peace with Sumeria (he will talk to me now) and trade my Metallurgy for his Education. What would be the 'penalty' that the AIs would impose on me, for breaking an alliance?

Thanks.

Deal breaker. It's an attitude hit across the board, plus it will be harder to get them to accept any alliance or pact in the future. I've had civs that were polite to me say" they remember how I treated so and so" and won't agree to an alliance or pact. Not sure if it affects ROP agreements, but poor AI attitude always makes agreements more expensive.

I'm sure you can handle them Elear.

Hmmm... interesting.

I hope I can handle it ;) It would be unbelievably devastating not to be able to trade GPT anymore.

You can trade gpt. Your reputation is quite specific when it comes to treaty busting.

Break an alliance, civs won't ally with you...either traditional, or mpp.

Declare war while trading them a resource, they will never trade for your resources again.

Declare war with rop (or without one, but with your troops in their border the turn of declaration of war) and you'll never get a rop again.

Declare war while you're giving them gpt, they will never accept gpt from you again.

If you made peace in your game, the only real effect it would have is that you won't be able to make an alliance or mpp any longer. Perhaps if it's early in the game and you keep a clean sheet for the rest of the game you'll be able to get one towards the end, but don't count on it.

Thanks for the advice!

I won't risk it then... I need alliances quite a lot. It's a great part of the strategy I use to setup AIs against each other and attack.

P.S. I ended up breaking the alliance because I needed to do it. I figured, no alliances...

But then everyone is like, no we won't trade lump sums for GPT anymore. We don't want to trade luxury either. Sorry. Bye.

Ahh. So that explains it. In a game I played a while back, I was the Germans. Early in the medieval era, everyone on the continent declared war on me. I invaded the Sumerians and slowly tried to make piece with everybody else. I made peace with Portugal. My first assault on Sumerias capital failed to kill everybody. No big deal, I'll try again next turn. And then all of a sudden, Portugal dow's Sumeria, and a bunch of Portugese ancient cavalry come streaming out of the jungle and take Ur right out from under my nose. So I immediately dow'd portugal, even though I signed a peace treaty with them 3 turns before. Yet I didn't seem to have a problem trading with anybody the rest of the game.

I don't remember, but I don't think I signed any other alliances or mpp's until the end of the game. The Zulu's beat me to the UN. Even though Shaka wasn't really playing well with others, I figured I better take it from him just to be safe. My first conventional assault failed. Yes, the panzers were stopped at the gates of Zimbabwe. So I signed an mpp with everybody else on the planet and nuked Zimbabwe and 4 other nearby cities and razed 2 of them. After all that I was mildly surprised I won the next UN vote.

Thanks for the article!

I have some ideas now ;)
