I suspect I know where at least one of the speed bottlenecks are for the game.
I just upgraded to Raid 0 for my hard drives, and now on a huge map I have probably 25% of the between turn times I did before. It really wasn't too bad for me before, but now it's awesome.
Even in the modern era with a few dozen civs having arose from barbarians it's only 10-15 seconds between turns now.
Just sharing a personal experience on speeding up the game. Since RoM is far better than Civ5, I plan on sticking with this for a while so all the performance I can get is golden.
