So I got BNW, (very excited) and was pleased to see you can dive straight into piety (my favorite tree) right off the bat. I'm trying to craft a build order and strategy for doing so and would like input from you guys.

I'm thinking scout, monument, that's about 15 turns which means you can have piety adopted by turn 18-19. For tec I say archery and pottery, you can build an archer after your monument then build a shrine in half time.

Now probably a settler, expand and build another half time shrine, and a worker at your Capitol and get a luxury ASAP. After adopting organized religion you will soon be making 4 faith per turn and well on your way to founding a religion, which from my understanding is much more powerful and versatile in BNW.

I would still mix Piety with Liberty left side. The more cities you can get, the more cheap shrines you can build.

Fast Philosophy for temples should also be a priority.

Maintenance is your only problem here, so get those trade routes going as well asap.

I think we might have a new path through social policies.

Open Piety - then finish Liberty/Tradition/Honor depending on your play style.

This should make it much easier to compete for a religion and strengthen your empire quite a bit.

Just opening Honor in order to see barb camps and protect your trade routes is also something the less restricted social policy changes might make viable. (If you open honor you need much fewer units to keep trade routes safe)

I'm thinking you should get to either Monarchy or Collective Rule before Piety opener.

My feeling as well. No need to hurry the opening of Piety just to build your first shrine faster. You need to set yourself up a little before being able to benefit from the Piety policies. It should probably be opened before you build the second shrine, I guess.

I'm thinking that Piety, while strong, is maybe not the best opener for getting your feet on the ground. I'm with livs. the one quality policy you might want in piety is reformation but unlike the religion itself its not a race and like all Civ it's context but I can't see many situations where a stronger city base isn't a better choice as long as you get the religion founded that you want.

In a culture victory I was playing (as Brazil), I opened with piety and also chose the +1 culture for shrines pantheon Ancestor Worship - this does help get through the policies in the earlier days. The reformation belief I was then able to chose was the one that improved tourism, so again, great to get that. As an aside, in G&K, I quite rigidly used either Messenger of the gods or Goddess of Protection, but the changed gameplay in BNW has led to me experimenting more.
