i think everyone has noticed the pillage command but what im wondering is when is that command applicable?

"Pillage" allows your military unit to destroy improvements made on the land by settlers/engineers (e.g., mines, irrigation, etc.). You'll never see it referred to here, however, because it's a really stupid thing to do. Let the AI improve the land (albeit rather haphazardly and inefficiently), then the land is improved when you take its city. The only exception I could possibly think of might be when you get the AI down to one city, to keep it from growing.

I mainly use 'pillage' to remove the fortifications that the AI builds once I have taken over his territory. That way I don't have to worry about Barbs popping up and occupying them.

I also use 'pillage' to destroy roads to create a kill zone for the AI. They always use the same route to come in and attack, so cut the road so that they have to go through the terrain and use their movement points, while you have units set to attack the spot they will end up in.

Also, if you ever want to put an airbase where a fortification is, you have to pillage the fortification first.

This is my game plan. For both Duke of M's "killing zone" plan above and for defensive purposes, I pillage roads & railroads the enemy uses to attack my (i.e., their former) cities.

Also, the AI has a habit of being mine-happy, so when I capture AI cities I often have to pillage the mines to create enough irrigated squares to feed the city.

alright thanx guys for letting me know about that. but the AI always builds roads all over place and woudl it be to my benefit to destroy these roads or let them be?

keeping the roads is generally best...it aids defense and attack by increasing your mobility (while the a.i is a bit dense about using roads) and provides trade benefits should you take the cities that control the squares with the roads (for almost all tiles).

If hardpressed by the A.I removing connecting roads between your city (position etc) and where the a.i is sending troops from can greatly benefit you...a reason why in "second front" by captain nemo he doesn´t want you to do this!

ok but i think since ive knocked the chineses off the face of the earth im going to redo the raods and rebuild with railroads to. but ive had to block off the route into my mainland cuz the AI or sneaking in and stealing my techs. so then i got to go destroy them.

Although it's all well and good to pillage roads most terrain squares need roads or railroads

grassland, plains, dessert for trade
hills (if mined), mountains (if mined), and forests for the extra shield

admittedly tundra, glacier, jungle, and swamp don't need roads but if that square has a river or a special resource that square will produce trade (roads on squares that already produce trade increase it further) or enough production that railroads will increase it further (the notable exception to this rule of building roads on specials in the musk ox)

Keep the roads, unless you are desperate

Actually, if you pillage roads and irrigation you stunt that cities trade and food, making unhappiness more likely and growth slow.

Pillaging is a good idea, newbies.

ok ill keep the roads and the places where sheilds are prodused ill put railroads

if you build railroads to increase production only build it on squares producing 2 production or more, there is no benefit for one production squares, but if it did <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/yeah.gif" border=0>

EDIT: i was stupid before hand so I needed to
