Pirates! vs. Pirates of the Carribean.

I recently borrowed a copy of "Pirates of the Carribean" from a friend to see how it was and it wasn't too bad. Being an adventure game, the replay value on it is rather low but not as low as most other adventure games. The sailing on it is rather fun and the ship combat is very entertaining.

I like playing games that have carribean themes of colonial days. So naturally when Sid released Pirates! I was anxious to get it. I never played the original but I am hoping this is more like a GTA model in the game. I have played games like Port Royale which I liked as well. Just wish it had a bit more to it.

Anyways, I know I am going to go out and purchase Pirates of the Carribean for Xbox most likely. Has anyone ever played both of them and able to give me the pros and cons of both? Or which they prefer and why? If Pirates! is better, I may go for it but I would like to know something about it first. In PotC the swordfighting is rather lame but it works, I guess. It is the sailing where it really captures me. Alot of times I was only turning it on to sail from 1 island to another before I turned it off. The missions are mostly on you which I like. I mostly played it as a merchant/buccaneer. But I don't care for the camera controls. The controls in general really, namely on land.

If anyone has any good way for me to see which I should buy being it Pirates! or PotC I would be glad to hear any.

Thanks.

That is how many men you have fighting with you and against. It can tip the tide of the swordfight...make it easier if you attack with a enough men. But can be a real pain if you are winning the sword fight and it goes to 1...becuase then you lose.

Pirates is a better overall game in my opinion, but PotC has its pluses and was made by people who loved Sid's original.

The adverture game part really was tacked on and it feels like it, this is the game that was originally planned as Sea Dogs 2, but they jumped at the chance at a movie tie in game and tried to come up with a more console friendly adventure game story that had something to do with the movie. What is great about the game is sailing and ship battles. What is bad about the game is everything else including the fact that even though it is Pirates of the Carribean, they are in fantasy islands, no Carribean. I have kept it though, its one of those games I think I might get back into one day because they did the ship fighting extremily well.

Sailing and ship battles in PotC is much better than in Pirates!, but Pirates is a more complete game and better overall IMO. They are not all that similiar though. Pirates! is a unique hybrid, like a bunch of fun mini games made into a whole. The ship battles are fun, but not simlike as in PotC. Arcadish, but really fun IMO, still I liked PotC better in that area. Its all the other stuff you do in Pirates and the RPGish elements it adds likes finding you family and going after known Pirates that is just fun.

Neither do sword fighting well. Sword fighting is too easy in Pirates though, which makes it kind of tedious.

Cool, thanks for the reply, Tae. :D

Now I am still at a toss up. :crazyeye: I might go ahead with Pirates! then pick up PotC later. I have to go price comp. :p

Well I actually recommend both games for different reasons, but I would probably play Pirates! first. The reason mainly is I think some people had a hard time going from PotC to Pirates because the game they wanted was PotC 2 and not Pirates!. What I mean by that is the ship battles is so good in PotC, it makes the game well worth playing and you just want more. The people I have seen going from PotC to Pirates!, seem to be so disappointed in the battles(unfortunately comparing them to something that really is just different), that they don't take time to see what is great about the rest of the game.

I was a fan of Sid's game before I played PotC, it is one of my all favorite games. The update they did for some reason is not as addictive as the older version, but I did get hooked for a while and keep it on my HDD. I love the update, but unfortunately they took some things out (treasure fleet, silver train) that I really miss and the sword fighting really is not challenging till you get to Swashbuckler, and honestly at that level the rest of the stuff is so damn hard I don't have as much fun.

I hope they make a true sequel. Meaning not just updating and enhancing, but really expanding. I like what they did with the update, but now it needs more.

I really have not been looking for a sequel to PotC, but I have been meaning to check out Age of Pirates, which I believe is what Sea Dogs became.

Is there a way to mod Pirates! much?

I have been staring at that Age of Pirates for a bit too. It looks decent. More than likely I will own it soon enough. If you check it out post about it I will do the same. But probably not for a month or two. I will se what happens after christmas. :)

Definately will mention it here if/when I get it.

Expanding the modding capibilities in Pirates! is one of the things they need to do in a sequel. All it has right now is mostly just skinning.

After this thread, I started playing again. I just wanted some lighter fair over Medievil 2, CIV or CoH. It fits the bill, I am hooked again.

It is just a fun game and I forgot the patch made sword fighting a little tougher on Adventurer, the level I mostly like to play.

Yeah, I don't mind the story - but at the same time I wish it was more selective. I only play it to sail. :p
It would be cool if they merged the game Port Royale with PotC. I haven't tried Pirates! out yet our Age of Pirates but I bet they have cool aspects too.

Guys, when you own PotC get the PotC Modpack build 13 from http://www.piratesahoy.com! Its more than worth it! It expands the gameplay much farther than Ol' Sid eveer thought of... For Age of Pirates: It gets patches and the modding community starts their work for AoP so they will transfer most of the PotCmod to AoP... at least i guess.. ;)! Have fun!

Unfortunately I have the Xbox version, so no mod for me.

Pirates of the Caribbean is actually half finished SeaDogs2, published in a hurry to exploit the Pirates of the Caribbean movie hype. I hate what they did because the game never got to it's full potential.

Take a screenshot ingame in PotC and check the filename of the screenie to know what I'm talking about.

I actually just purchased Age of Pirates Caribbean Tales and I love it. At first I thought it was going to be too complicated, but it turned out to be quite easy once you get the hang of it.

I had already purchased and played Port Royal 2 and Sid's Pirates and found that understanding these two games made AoP much easier to grasp.

AoP has the Individual RPG open endedness that was lacking in Sid's Pirates, and has the better sea and land battle that Port Royal was lacking.

Overall I am loving this game and would recomend it to anyone, esspecially as a way to relax from an intense game of CIV IV!!!

If anyone has any questions about this game please pm me.
