My Civ III disk is now generates a read error - there appears to be a surface scratch which I wouldn't have thought was that deep but what do I know ? :(

So, does anyone know if Play The World is a complete game that encompasses Civ III or am I going to have to buy the original again in addition ?

We'll just have to try, don't we? I'll let you know in october.
I don't think that you need both cd's in your computer (I mean changing disks...d'oh!) but who am I?

I have read soemwhere that some game companies will issue you a new disk if your original becomes damaged (at a slight cost, cheaper than the game). drop Firaxis a message and see if they do that sort of thing, if not, you may have to wait till PTW, which I assume will NOT be a stand-alone game.

Good point, that may well be worth a try. :goodjob:

Firaxis said it will have its own executable icon so you can play Civ3 with or without the icon, but I think that PTW encompasses all of Civ3, just like the expansion pack for AOE2 did.

Stuff like that is why I always cover my CDs with Lanacane, the anti-itch cream.

With Roller Coaster Tycoon Loopy Landscapes, after you installed LL, you only used the LL disk. :satan: Perhaps it will be that way with Civ3.

Based on the press release information from Firaxis and the instructions on the PTW box art,

PTW will be a complete game BUT you will have to purchase and install CIV3 on your computer BEFORE PTW will install. The install shield will check for the existence of a valid version of CIV3 before it will execute. After installing PTW, the piracy protection software will check to see that the PTW CD is available in the drive on the computer.

If your CD is damaged, you may return it to INFOGRAMES for a replacement.

PTW will be a complete game BUT PTW won't be a complete game. So the people who haven't bought civ3 (like my friend who's waiting for PTW) will have to buy civ3 and PTW???

yay :(

No offense meant but this should come as no surprise. I mean they are calling it an expansion pack and not releasing it as a new game. Therefore, one would have to assume that you need CIV 3.

It comes as a surprise to me. Is this standard practice in the gaming world? (I'm not a big gamer, civ3 is the only game I play...)

Narmox: Yep, it's pretty standard. Civ 2 had two expansions (Fantastic Worlds and Scenarios), each which required the original Civ 2.

The kinda nice thing is that they don't charge as much for an expansion. Mind you, the cost for an expansion used to be about $20-$30, but now it's in the $40 range (with full games starting at around $60). So if you're starting from scratch, it could cost as much as $100 (plus tax, and plus any S&H if bought online) to play.

It sucks, I know.

Now convert that to canadian dollars... ouch! something like 1000$ ;)

side-note: civ2 also had UCC/MGE, which didn't require the original ;)

I have a feeling that they will release it as a whole new game (like they did with Sim City 3000 Unlimited) just to get the money. I think that it's a good plan for them, because I'll bet that 80% of us will buy the new game. That said, I hope they don't. Actually, I think it would be cool if they sold it both ways. That way newbies who have never bought the game could just buy one copy and the rest of us could pay 1/2 price and get it all. That said, I don't think that will happen either because then newbies would only have to buy one CD. Although...just to add more confusion, don't you think it would be cool if you could exchange your CivIII CD for a PTW CD with both of them on it? Highly unlikely, but that would be my ideal situation.

A Civ3 MGE is bound to happen eventually. :yeah:

Just let your friend use your original Civ disk to install the expanion over. It's not like it has a cd-key ckeck like Diablo on Batlenet.

Oops.... please don't report me to Firaxis :)
