Playable on a Laptop?

Just wondering if anyone has had success running Pirates on a laptop. I tried installing a friends copy, and it would load for a few seconds, then crash out. My laptop can run the Civ 4 graphics engine, which I am told is a beefed up version of the Pirates Engine, so it might be that, but I doubt it.

And can one reconfigure the Number Pag settings to other keys so I don't have to use the mouse all the time?

It runs fine on my laptop (3.2ghz, 128mb radeon 9700, 512mb ram). I've also played it on a Tablet (1.7ghz Pentium-M, 512mb ram, on-board vid) and don't remember having much problems, although it may have lagged a bit.

I believe the arrow keys still work. At worst, you can use function lock. I don't remember for sure, thought.

Just read somewhere I can remap all the keys if I want to anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue. Any idea whether I can run it on my integrated Intel card?

All I have is a laptop and it works. A friend of mine has the newer version of the same laptop but his graphics card only goes to 32 bits and mine goes to 64 bits. He can't play Civ IV or Pirates!

Civ 4 was a $$$$$$$$$$$ making project it was supported immediately for older graphics cards.
Pirates was abandoned before it was issued. No support and especially no support for anything that does not immediately run it.
(I AM being nice here.)

The keys can be changed.
Look in the keymap file in your saves directory.

;
; Commands for sailing around the world
[Sail]
ToggleChaseView_v = v
AttackShip_a = a ;attack ship in range
FullSails_Num8 = Num8
ReefedSails_Num2 = Num2
TurnLeft_Num4 = Num4
TurnRight_Num6 = Num6
QuickLoad_L = L
QuickSave_S = S
ReturnShip_r = r

In particular change the values after the =
These changes only work with the patch.

Better suggestion is to get an outboard keypad.

I wish I could get far enough to have THOSE problems! The Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics card in my Toshiba Tecra A1 chokes right when I try to set sail. I got a new driver from Intel, and it won't install. Got a new driver from Toshiba, and it won't install. Does anyone have a clue for me?

Contact customer service for your Toshiba. You said their driver won't install.

If you mean that the game won't install . . . that's entirely another issue.

However onboard graphics are notorious for never running a game like Pirates. Also check out that pesky "T&L support" line in system requirements.

Yeah, it doesn't have T&L, but it WILL run Civ IV which also requires it, on the same engine no less . . .

same engine

NOT

Similar maybe. Same people developing - possibly
Same - no
Proof - Civ is supported by the company.
Pirates NEVER WAS!

I'm using a laptop, it's a bit of a pain without the numpad, but I've grown so used to the mouse I don't think it makes a difference anymore.
