Player CIV Placement on Continents favors isolationism?

Whenever I start up a single-player Continents game, 4 times out of 5 I end up a Continent by myself. It seems to happen way too often to just be coincidence--I had one Succession Game that I started where it took 4 tries before there was someone else on my continent, and since then every Continents game I've played I've started by myself.

I don't know if this is a bug, but it is certainly illogical. Have others noticed this behavior with the Continents maps as well?

Depends on the number of continents, number of nations and world size, I would guess.
Playing gigantic maps with 18 nations, in 8 out of 10 starts I am placed on a midsize continent with 3 - 6 neighbours.
Sometimes, though, I happen to come up on an isolated island.

I play all my games on Continents maps, and I generally start with 3-4 civs sharing the same continent (playing large maps with 7-8 other civs). I can only remember of 1 particular game (out of 20-25 I played so far) where I started by myself on a continent. This was a treat, as it marked my first prince victory
