Just for the sake of blowing my on trumpet and for anyone else hoping to do something similar, I managed to get BTS 3.19 working on an Asus Eee 900a (albeit an upgraded to 2Gb RAM and 32GB SSD Eee 900a).
This system uses a 1.6GHz Intel Atom and Intel 950 GMA...quite capable of running some older games, although as we know, in the late game CIV can get quite intensive.
The Asus, as per many netbooks has a screen of 1024 x 600, below the minimum required of CIV unless you play in windowed mode then maximise the window.
Altering the civilization.ini file is the best way to do this, and you can also allow for windowed mode side scrolling to make your life easier. Disabling sound will apparently improve performance considerably but I haven't tried this.
It plays pretty well on this system, but I wouldn't recommend anything over tiny maps. I lowered all the graphics settings as low as they'll go and it's pretty playable.
My guess is that Civ III would run pretty sweet so I'm going to install that as well via Steam.
Hopefully handy for anyone trying to get this working on an older netbook of some sort.
Running Windows 7 SP1 by the way, which is running so much smoother than the Ubuntu 11.10 install it's ridiculous (I set my Eee up to dual boot so I can have access to kMyMoney).
Self loving over.
