Playing on Terra Map: Very nice conundrum.

I think I just noticed something that, if I'm right, will no doubt require many a hard decision, and be the subject of multiple strategy debates:

In order to colonize overseas, one must obsolete the Colossus. This is a pretty big deal for my current nation, which has 9 of its 13 cities on the coast. I don't see any wonders that allow ocean exploration, either. The only was I see around this would be to push towards Combustion, which would allow transports to be built. However, that would require waiting quite a bit longer to colonize. This could be an interesting conundrum, because the gold I lose from obsoleting the Colossus might be the difference-maker in whether or not I'm ready to colonize overseas.

Well done, sirs. Well done, or am I missing another way to colonize (apart from getting lucky with a Caravel and Explorer...)

relying on a single wonder to support your play isn't really the best idea.

Astronomy also allows trade accross ocean which can bring increased profits anyway.

Trade routes are formed in cities according the the most profitable one, the profit increases the further away a city is.

Thus if you have an entirely new continent, the cities on that continent and the cities from your old one will both experiance and benefit larger profit margins.

It isn't the only thing supporting it, but it is undeniably a very nice boost to my economy.

Not on the last terra map I played. There was nothing overseas besides unexplored land. All of the nations were on one continent (Old World) and the New World was awaiting. I believe that is intentionally the way it is set up.

The point of the Terra map is that about half-way through the game the Old World powers (who are usually very crowded by this point) get a New World to conquer. The trade will happen eventually once the colonies get claimed.

BTW, Astromony allows Galleons which can carry your Settlers and Troops.

Right, which is why I'm trying to get to the New World before anyone else and see how that strategy works.

Right, and it also obsoletes the Colossus, which I mentioned earlier.

You will also want to be the first to circumnavigate the world so that you can improve your ship movement rate by 1, to speed colonization efforts.

Yeah, I just figured that out quite accidentally. :)

Well, that is the point of a strategy game. Having to make hard decisions. Long term the colonization will probably make you more money (assuming you beat the AI to the punch), if you can survive the short term financial hit.

Remaining peacefull on the Old World while you run up the techtree to Astronomy is a fun challenge ine the "Terra" map. Whats fun about this type of map, besides the fact that the exploration of the world lasts MUCH longer, is that if you manage to colonize the New World with many cities, it gives you a long term advantage over your adversaries. Also, another cool thing is that the Barbarians on the New World are actually well devellopped, they can have cities of 8 and 9 in size, and you actually need a few boats full of military units to clean them out, which in turn gives you large starter cities on the New World.
