When I try to open an old game started before I got 1.22, it won't work. People have talked about patching in the middle of the game, but that doesn't work for me. When I try to load it, an error message comes up that says something like "Error: DATE" and when I close it it pops up again, and does that 4 times. Then it says "error reading file" in the baige civ color.

All save games saved in pre 1.22 (really 1.20, when Radio was removed, iirc) will not load in 1.22. The tech tree is different (no more Radio), so it is not backwards compatable.
You can not play games started in 1.15 or before in 1.22, unless it is a scenario as the rules are in the save game, not altered from the patch. You can do 1.00 and 1.15, but not 1.15 and 1.22.
