I tried multiple times to mod the original dialogue of the leaders such as Alexander, and it never works. I have a pic of the buddy thing linked. Why doesn't it work?

Impossible to tell at all from that screenshot.

Can you post the code you have in the dialog XMLs? Do you have all the XMLs set to OnModActivated UpdateDatabase?
