Please help a newbie

The Ethernet Controller is your Notwork card which unless your planning to play CIV4 over a network isn't a bit problem.

SM Bus Controller is a motherboard componant (which should have been installed when you installed windows / your motherboard drivers), I'm not sure if its essential but i'll do some research and get back to you.

do you know what MB of ram your graphics card has got on it??

EvilFuzzyDoom

If you uninstalled CIV4 the patch goes with it so yes you do have to download the patch again.,

which Graphics card have you got because all you've said is that its a 64MB card?

Card's a NVidia GeForce 4 MX 440, 64Mb.
CPU's AMD Duron 1200
Ram's something over 700Mb (I dunno how either...)

Odd, I could have sworn that I'd unticked the "Uninstall patch" button  no matter, i've just finished d/l-ing it again.

I have a feeling that my CTDs might be a problem with the card, one or two other programs have given me the same error message ("This program has generated errors and must be closed") as Civ4. I doubt it's overheat though, because I've taken the side off my tower O.O I'm considering sticking a floorfan next to it as a final attempt.

If all goes wrong, I may stick in another card, but then I'd have wasted the $50 I got my dad to pay the tech guys at the store to stick it in -_-

EDIT: I've also ramped up the virtual memory to 3gig. Silly maybe but it was running under 1g before I touched it :P

Oh, and that's $50 Australian, not US$ O.O

I tried again this morning. Just to let you know how it went, I am wondering what a computer looks like while it burns:mad:

The only thing I can think of doing now is tampering with game settings, and I don't know enough to do this:mad:

I tried installing a new graphics card- went from GeForce4 MX440 to GeForce4 Ti4200... And back again. I got blank screen and the card didn't fit the slot properly anyway. And the fan didn't work so it toasted my dainty little fingers when I removed it. Not related to cIV but... *sigh*.

Well, I found out that I was having the same CTD problems running Neverwinter Nights (the only other vaguely-up to date game I own  ) as with cIV, and ramped down the hardware acceleration functions in Display:Advanced:Troubleshooting. Helped NWN, but not cIV. Actually made cIV run slower (DUH) because all the functions were being run by the CPU... And it still crashed anyway, just took longer. I also tried a couple of .ini modifications... no love there :(

I'm starting to think this might be a compatibility thing with DirectX9... Other than Civ4 and the graphics card (tho' THAT might be my issue), DX9 is the only thing I've changed in the last couple of weeks. I've tried downgrading AND upgrading my drivers (77.62-->71.89-->81.95), and the problems are identical for each one. The fact that NWN is having the same problems makes me think this even more... Hmm...

Considering that a friend of mine (who knows far more than humble old I about these things) mentioned that DX9 has some sort of graphics issues, I'm thinking about ramping down my DirectX to v.8... Tho' I don't have any idea what effect that might have O.o

In the meantime, I'm going to have a bash at the Blue Marble mod, some people seem to have got some joy from there. Fingers crossed, eh?

Let me know how you get on with that mod please mate.

I was thinking it might be Directx 9 but my brother (who owns an IT company) said it was fine.

I have tried all the drivers for my graphics card, motherboard and sound card. And I'm pretty sure I have done them all with each different version of the others.

Have you had a chance to do this mod yet? And if you have, did it help at all?

Tony
Yeah, I gave it a try, but no difference. The game still runs perfectly fine up until the point where it commits suiceide -_-' It's either a software issue or something to do with the graphics card, but as I'm too scared to put in the Ti4200 again, and my old card's gone walkabout, I can't really test it. The sheer lack of progress is just maddening

Did you two buy the game on release date or after?

Because there has been some labelling issues with CIV4.
